fowldreams
Just trying to think ahead a bit. Wondering what everyone prefers for their slug gun of choice. Im in the market for a new one. Wife gave the go ahead, so I better do it before her mind changes.
slimngrizzly
I bet you'll get a hundred different answers of good guns. I shoot a 11-87 and like it, its heavy though. If i bought a differnt one, id buy a 20 gauge, otherwise I like the auto. I dont know much about these bolt action sluggers but ive heard you can get a little more accuracy out of them. Im sure someone will know. Good luck! Buy before she remembers to change her mind!

carpshooterdeluxe
If I was going to buy a dedicated slug gun it would for sure be a 20 gauge semi with a cantilever rifled barrel.
Archerysniper
For nothing but slugs I would buy a savage bolt 20GA
LakesTrading
My slug gun of choice is a Browing A-Bolt 12 gauge with Leupold Ultimateslam scope. It has outstanding accuracy out to 200 yards.
Finlander
I bought a Mossberg 500 20ga. combo. It comes with a regular smoothbore barrel and a cantaleviered rifled barrel and scope. I replaced the scope with a higher end and I use Hornady SST sabots that shoots super accurate! Drops deer in their tracks! Never had a deer run away after hittng them! Whoaru99
I have an Remington Sportsman 12 (low grade 870) with a Hastings rifled barrel and Bushnell Trophy 1.75 - 4x Turkey/Brush scope. Works works good for me.
Gordie
For nothing but slugs I would buy a savage bolt 20GA This would be my choice also
ChrisT
I love my TC encore in 12 Ga. Plus I can get a muzzy barrel for it as well. Super accurate, but kicks like a 3 legged ninja.
fowldreams
For a update. Ended up getting the camo/stainless 20 gauge savage with the leupold ultimate slam last night. Cant wait to shoot it next weekend. There sure is a price jump on these new slugs though.
Archerysniper
You will be pleased with that purchase. I have see them perform extremely well out too 250 yards.
trolloni
A very fine choice ,you wont be disapointed, the next step will be finding out what ammo is best ,mine likes 3 inch federal barnes expanders, very accurate!
Archerysniper
The federals are great and another to try is the Hornday Sts ballistic tips.
perchking
Interesting reading this thread. But why a 20GA over a 12GA? I mean you only shoot it a couple of times per year if your reasoning is the recoil, but maybe I like hunting with elephant guns:)Non the less, good luck with your new slugger I am sure you will like it. Finlander
I have a 20 ga. Mossgerg and it is so light that it's like toting around a rifle versus a heavy 12ga. Lets you keep your gun in your hands longer avoiding having to grab your gun when you can't move. And you all been there! So!
trolloni
That little ole 20 shoots way flatter than a 12 ,i would say about like a 50 cal muzzeloader .
Archerysniper
Yes the 20Ga has better/flatter ballistics.
Finlander
Every deer I shot with my 20ga dropped in it's tracks! Hornady SST's at 1800fps rocks'em!
96trigger
for that particular gun, I have read on numerous sites that the 220 is more accurate and kicks less than the 212. The 212 probably really bucks and therefor, is probably harder to hold on to.
Gordie
When a shotgun wins rifle of the year award and I understand that they tested the 20 ga That has to say something in itself.
fowldreams
Some of the way it was also explained to me by the sales guy before I made the purchase was, that there is plenty of lead behind the 20 gauge. Why do you need more? The sabots that I bought are 265 gr. , when even compared to my 30-06 I am only shooting 150 grains. With that said it will put down any game in this state. harvey lee
You have plenty of gun with the 20 to get the job done and a down range shot will be better also.
perchking
See, I learn something from this site every day. Thanks for the clarification....
