I only fish in the rain when it rains out, otherwise I avoid it grin

That's good. I like that.

I've fished in heavy downpours. One year on a trip to a Canadian lake we had one day where it rained one minute and was sunny and hot the next. I never put my rain gear on and off so many times in my life. We even tried to cook a shore lunch while standing in a huddle with our rain coats open over the fire to keep it going.

Lightning? Even in the distance one is a fool to continue to stay out in the open in an aluminum conductor holding a graphite lightning rod in your hands. Get off the water when it is lightning. If you can see it at all, it is a threat even from the horizon.

Some of the best crappie fishing I ever experienced was during a heavy rain.

i have fished in rain plenty of times. especialy trout fishing in streams where after a rain the stream comes alive and the trout are not as wary. only bad thing was that the mosquitoes found shelter under your hat or rain hood real quick. when i was younger and had little fear of lightning, it took a huge bolt of lightning on a canadian lake to strike a big pine on a island near us to put fear of that stuff in me real quick. when the bolt hit that pine it literaly blew the pine in half in and explosion that was loud and firery.

now i dont get too exited about light rain, but heavy rain is not part of my fishing time. i have had some good results as i said in trout streams during and after a "normal" rain and did well on lakes during and after a "normal" rain. good luck.

Have done real well fishing in the rain, of course better in the summer when it is warm as if you stay out long enough you are going to get wet no matter what. As noted lighting is a whole another matter and best to get off the water but them warm rains can be memory makers. Many a BWCA trip we would just fish in shorts and a hat and put clothes in a dry bag. Top water action can be surprisingly good and fish seem to wander out farther from their hideaways and attack zones get bigger.

We have in the past kept an AM radio on, you can hear distance stikes when the radio gets static. It does work.

Heh. Yep, I've been doing this trick forever.

There are a handful of personal lightning detection systems out there.

As far as rain goes... as long as I have the proper attire, or at least a change of clothes or something to dry off with later, rain isn't going to keep my off the lake.

It might in november and march though.... i hate cold.

Was on Winnie years back and the sun was shining and fish biting, when one of the guts says look at my line as he let it out it made a loop from his pole to water 30 feet up. Only cloud was a long way off, and no rain. In five minutes peoples hair was standing straight up and those with graphite poles had to throw them down as it snapped when they let go. I never saw 20 boats make so much chatter and move so fast for shore. In minutes it rained, hailed, and windy. In minutes it was normal again. Very scary and strange.

never go out when there is lightning and thunder, the fish get scared and they go deep for cover. and if you are out when there is lightning, GET OUT OF THE WATER cause you might be the only highest thing on the lake, so you dont fry up

I like fishing in the rain as long as my feet are dry. Lightning is a concern but just cause it's raining does not mean you are in danger. Use your head and you can catch lots of fish while everyone else hides under the bed.

I spent all of last week fishing in the rain on a BWCA trip. I guess I'd prefer it NOT be raining, but I'll take a good bite in the rain to a mediocre bite on a nice day every time. Heck, I'd take fishing in the rain to fishing in a big wind, too. I hate wind. smile

Just like tall buildings on land they have lightning rods connected by cable to capture strikes and transfer the strike to the ground, in this case water. Actually the steel hulls are better at this then a wood or fiberglass boat would be.
