I stopped an hour before dark and found someone else leaving my shroomin hot spot! Gave it a go anyway and found they likely stepped on or over more than they picked...left with a couple of pounds, mix of big and small grays/and a few yellows.full-16801-19491-mushrooms4_15_12.jpg

LOL, look just south of the hat...Maybe that's why they didn't find anything. They were looking for a place to grow instead of looking for mushrooms.

ilovehardwater, Focus! It's hard to find one thing when your looking for another! laugh

I found a few this weekend trout fishing down in Fillmore County. I think this early spring and the frosty nights are playing with their little mushroom minds tho. Most of them had black tops like from frost bite? Others were just really dried up. Another frosty night tonight I guess...hopefully they'll keep growing after it finally stays warm out.

So do morels grow in pretty much any hardwoods area? Or are they specific to certain areas? I've been looking for the first time this spring and haven't found a one. I've only looked in the 15 acres of old hardwoods behind our house - lots of dead elms, but not very open to sunlight - does that matter? I'd love to find some in the Montevideo area, but having no luck so far.

Found about 30 black morels 10 miles north of Crosslake today. Most were small and a couple were about 2 inches. Looked like they had just popped. Just starting here, I'm hoping the rain wasn't too late. We had 3 inches of snow on the ground Monday and Tuesday.

Shrooms are coming real strong in SE MN now. My brothers were out this morning before the rain and picked another 21 lbs. Another brother just called and they picked 8 lbs in the state park. They put them on hsolist for $20 a pound and had all of them sold within 2 hours today.
