Deer ticks

Recommended Posts

Went for a short walk to pop up a camera this a.m. Found 2 deer ticks on me at home. One crawling on my hand and one stck to blue jeans. Hopefully that's all. Didn't even think about spraying first. D'oh! Close to St Joe.

I had 3 of the little buggers last weekend. Hoping for cooler weather so I can get out again and do some scouting.

Why is it that people say dry weather is good for ticks but I also hear rain is good for ticks? I have also heard that little snow cover over the winter will help keep the numbers down because they aren't as protected. Who knows for sure, I have a feeling we are screwed either way.

my vet told me that deer ticks are out more in the spring and fall and "regular" ticks more from May until fall. hopefully i heard her correct but like you said they will be around all year. i have always thought that ticks hate hot weather and love cooler weather like spring and fall. a poster recently posted that they use premethrin spray for ticks and is happy with it for personal use. if i recall right it repells and kills ticks. i'll be looking at it and research it. good luck.

i had the same thing last year. i went right to the doctor. when i took it off i left the head in. if you think it was a deer tick i would go to the doctor and and he will give you a couple of antibiotics just in case. i went to the doc and he got the head out, cleaned the bite area and gave me a couple of antibiotics and i was fine by the next day. not worth waiting for it to get worse if you already are noticing a rash. good luck.

I don't take any chances. Pretty much whenever I go into the woods these days (except for the dead of winter), I make sure I'm wearing clothes sprayed with permethrin. I have never found a tick of any kind on me since I started doing this. I spray literally every single article of clothes, including my hat with it. I've placed ticks on my treated clothes, and watched them squirm around and die in a matter of seconds.

I also shell out $30 or $40 every two years for a Lymes test when I'm in anyways for a cholesteral test. Just one more vial of blood, and it makes me feel a little better. I know too many people who have had lymes, and it is nothing to mess around with. I talked to one forest worker who had latent lyme's disease. They were performing an unrelated surgery on him, and noticed his liver was toast. He had lyme's for many years and never knew it, and now he has major health issues to deal with. Scary stuff.

This last year during deer hunting was the worst for ticks I have ever encountered. I was pulling them off me sitting on stand the whole time. Then the buck I got probably had 200 of them all in one glob on its back. You can see in this picture that they ate his hair off. We had occasionally found a tick or two on a deer before. full-38623-18927-2011_11_07_12_19_48_606

Im a lymer from last year an let me tell ya ya dont want this sh it. Check your self everday if you live in the country an evertime your out in the woods, when ya get home take off everything an wash your clothes right away so they dont have time to latch on to someone else or the dog. I find more ticks when Im home than I do when I first come outa the woods. Bad stuff. I got lucky my chiropractor found the bullseye, dont know how long i woulda went if he hadnt told me to take my shirt off an to examine my spine. CHECK, CHECK AGAIN AN CHECK AGAIN. later baor

muskiemanAD, that is interesting that you thought last year was really bad for ticks. I hunt in a bad deer tick area and never had a single one on me last year. I talked to the local C.O. and he said the same thing. Funny how they are abundant in one area and not another.
