two man portable......which one?

Which two man portable is the best. I looked at the clam and the diamond shape fabric on the ceiling looks like it will come apart easy and might rip easier than the frabil. Which is more durable? What are the thoughts on square tubing?

Thanks

Your first sentence said which is best so I'm voting for Canvas Craft. I love mine. No experience with the square poles but the round ones in the CC have stood up to some pretty brisks winds this year with no issues.

I have used the square pole and round pole systems. I have also used the regular and insulated portables. Last Monday I was out in winds up to 40mph and my poles still work like new. I have had this house for 4 years and it has been a great portable.

if money is not a huge issue, check out the Canvas Craft insulated portables. They are the best insulated model on the market and thier round pole system slides together like they have been greased up.

Nice white interior for ease of lighting and it is very well contrusted.

They use an Otter tub so you know that you are getting one of the toughest tubes on the market today.

For am uninsulated portable, do yourself a favor an at least look at the Otter line up of portables.

Thanks for the replies. My father in-law is the one looking so I don't know his price range. I just looked at canvas craft's site and they do look awesome.

Thanks again.

The Otter Cabin Or Lodge would be my pick. Cabin is a smaller two man but great for 1 big guy and his gear. The lodge is a roomy 2 man that can carry everything 2 guys would bring. Check them out at www.otter.com The Pro Series is all insulated and the Wild series has a thermal top.

I got one of the new insulated otter cabins this year. Best on the market in my opinion! I was "team blue" until I saw the quality of the otter. Sold my clam and never looked back.

I had an Otter for 10 years and have been researching the insulated for the past few years and finally pulled the trigger this year at the ice show. Kept my otter sled as I have it modified and put on the Canvas Craft insulated skin with new poles on my sled. The thickest of any vendor, great company, and not the ugly camo of an otter. If you can save a few extra buck for the insulated its worth every cent in the end. Hands down Canvas Craft has the best product out there.

Canvas Craft for the smashing victory.

Only get a large if you have an 8ft truck box or a trailer to haul it in. Wish someone would of told me that before I bought one, they are a beast. Awesome though if you can haul it around easily.

I sold it to a buddy now I'm going with the magnum.

I also have an otter cabin and really like it for a mega one man or a comfy 2 man. Gets a bit crowded with 4 holes and stuff on the ice though.

Were you able to simply swap a new skin onto your otter poles and sled? I have a purple with square poles and cracked windows. Looking at options after this season. I know you can get new windows sewn in but I'd rather just put that money towards an insulated option from otter or cc. Thanks in advance!

Ugly camo??? If that's not an oxymoron. There's no such thing! grin

No you can not just swap skins, there is a slight difference in design (for the better, larger). When you order a skin you order skin and poles for the otter sled. I had an old green one and had to talk to the guys to figure out which size I needed. As soon as I told them what color and style they knew exactly which one I needed. It does add some bulk and weight but still worth it.

As far as ugly camo, YES otters ice camo looks like dog dodo. It is their biggest mistake going with those colors cause they do make a high quality product when compared to the others.

Ive owned a Dave Genz Trap Guide since they were introduced. Times are changing and so does your technique of fishing, you become a more Precise Angler. If you are a Bow hunter you understand. I bought a new popup thermal this year and have been contemplating what to get. No matter what I do, when I fish I try to drill as many holes as possible,so once I locate active fish. BAM! up goes my new pop up. I been very please with the new looks of shelters.

you do know that since you have a guide you can buy the full thermal nanook skin and it will fit your guide model. they are the same exact dimensions. I had a fish trap 1 and ended up putting a scout canvas on it before I sold it. this would give you the option of going full thermal with your guide also.

Brad B you are the man. I have used this shelter 70 plus days a winter. It shows , the wind blows throgh it and there is no tightness to the fabric. how much did it set you back for/

I don't remember what the scout canvas set me back but I did check out the clam HSOforum and they have a replacement guide canvas listed for $169.99 or a thermal nanook for $204.99. this will give you options if you want to re do the guide.

Canvas Craft fish houses are the best! I have owned Clams & Otters too. My otter poles use to bindup or freeze up. Get the Norpac Thinsulate material. You can use the Medium single or Magnum single. I have the Magnum single & love it. I can fish with a buddy, my kid & me in the house. Best house out there! No wind flap! No condensation drip! Plus, you save money on less propain.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
