Have you used a hole hawg before? I have many smashed fingers and even broke my nose with one, their is no forgiveness when they catch and will either twist out of your hands or twist your hands up in it. Good luck I hope it works out for you.

Exactly what I was thinking, Could be trouble if anything catches.

I hope for your sake all works as planned but be careful with it.

I used this type of set up a couple years ago, but I used a Timber-wolf that had a clutch.

I would suggest installing a rod/pin just a little bigger than the hole your drilling so that when that beast of a drill is beating you against the wall and you finally have the sense to let go the trigger, the chuck doesn't release the auger down the hole. I would also definitely not wear a scarf or a cape.

A Cape ringtailhunter? I just about spit my coffee on my keyboard. I could just see someone get spun in circles with a cape flapping in the wind. In all seriousness though. That thing probably will break your wrist if it catches the ice. Good luck and stay safe.

the low speed setting on the hole hawg is 300rpms the jiffy legend auger is around +/- 390. I most certainly will not be using the high speed (1200 rpm). I will have to drill in reverse with the jiffy... and loosing up is a fear but if it works well, i will mount permanently to the drill I.E weld or drill push pin. I have used these many many times and fully understand the power they have so caution will be used... I have many drills i can use but i like the low speed setting.... I have spun my wrist far more times with my smaller Milwaukee drill then this one with the 1' handle... I am also working on putting a plastic stopper for if the chuck loosens up to save the auger from swimming. Thanks much for all the comments and concerns and I will certainly heed all warnings! I will report back when tested....

Tested auger last night and everything worked better than expected. cut 3 holes faster and smoother than I have have before. It was actually much less work and fatigue than my gas powered auger. There was solid 12" of clear ice. I highly recommend a rig like this for wheel house applications... be sure to drill with low setting. to prevent loosing the auger down the hole I used a drill press and drilled a hole through the chuck and threaded the hole, I then put small bolt through so it cannot fall off. I am considering welding for an even more permanent application... full-37311-15663-img_1727.jpg

Awesome! Glad to see it worked for ya!

Also, just to let you know, Hole Hawg drill chucks are fastened to the arbor with reverse threads and a screw inside the chuck. If you're running in reverse and that screw is not in place you have a chance of the auger catching and unscrewing the threads, dropping the auger down the hole. MAKE SURE THE SCREW IS IN PLACE INSIDE THE CHUCK.

I did something simalar back in the early eighty's with a two speed eletric auger and I put the bit from a 7 inch hand auger on it well the handles were long enough tubing that when the auger stuck in the hole witch was a corner hole those nice long handles went thru the wall thru thr corner studs and thru thr other side of the wall untill it knocked me on my arse and then it spun so fast it ripped he cords off the battery on the truck as I watched while sitting on my cape grin

I decided then it was nothing to fool around with so I just left it up to the auger makers for my future uses

I have always loved the home made Macgyver stuff that people come up with. But not everyone has a used Mil Hole Hawg sitting around and for the cost of $425 or so for a new one you may as well just buy a new Volt! But, you do have one so have fun and drill what you brought! wink

What kind of 2 speed drill? My hole hawg only runs at 300 rpms And is easy to control. It has stuck on me and was very easy to control. I use these often and drill through some very strong timbers... the ice is much more forgiving then hard wood timbers.
