Remote start

Recommended Posts

Hi I am looking for a remote start kit for my wifes car. The biggest thing I am looking for is ease of installation. I want to do it myself. Anyone have any recommendations? Theres a lot out there, and hard to choose one.

I all honesty go with someone that's a pro.

Each car is different. I just got one for my significant other and she has had problems with it so far. Today the guy who installed it is coming to look at it.

Basically, wiring it in yourself you could come across with several problems with it not working not having it wired right to causing electrical issue with your car.

At least if you get it done somewhere if they mess it up they are heal accountable.

In my case I contacted a friends brother who does this for a living. He is on his way over today to do some reprogramming and verify he did everything right as we have not been able to do anything with the remote starter as it triggers the alarm and causes problems getting it off.

My advice is to find someone that does it for a living, they can trouble shoot as I found there is practically NO trouble shooting websites out there for the brand and model she has.

I would avoid best buy or similar likes and find truly just a person that does this everyday.

Always post a year, make, and model. That way we are all on the same page as far as what we are dealing with.

With that said if its a newer vehicle with anti-theft options leave it to the pros.

With THAT said I spend a fair amount of time uninstalling them in order to correct various Driveability and starting issues. It always costs a lot more to uninstall (correctly) than it does to install.

I installed one in my truck a few years ago, 12+ hours over 2 days. I will not attempt again, I will pay someone to do it for me! All the ones I've checked on say easy install, but don't be fooled. It's not easy following those directions.

As someone who has installed them in Fords, I would also recommend paying someone to do it.

Unless you know automotive electrical well, you can end up damaging some spendy parts.

That being said there are some that are not bad to install if you are still willing to attempt it.

Need year, make , and model.

Wow, didnt realize they were that tough, the car is an 06 chevy cobalt with remote unlock lock key fob. so thats what it would be going in. Anyone know of a place that does this in the sw mn area?

I didn't realize they were that difficult to install either, until my dad bought me one for Christmas one year right after I bought my truck. He bought it through a place that specializes in remote starters and such so they installed it also. Well it was the first Colorado they had ever worked on and the manufacturer had nothing on the Colorado either. They had my truck for 2 1/2 days and even had one of the engineers from the manufacturer out to help them figure it out. I'm not a fan of being a guinea pig with a brand new vehicle, but it works and hasn't caused any problems. Would I install one myself? Probably not. Just way to much expensive stuff that can go wrong.

Leave it to the pro's.

My little sister bought a cheap system for her car and she had it installed at the high school shop. They tried for several days to get it working and it never did. You would think at one point the teacher of the class tried to get it working too.

The three work trucks had systems installed from Circuit City and any repair work gets done at Best Buy. Last time they had to program a new remote and they didn't charge me anything.

If you still decide to install yourself GOOD LUCK!!!

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
