Garage Door Roller keeps bending

Down2Earth

Recommended Posts

I built a shed a year ago and this is the second winter. I had the garage doors professionally installed. this summer the door stopped going up due to a bent roller (Really bent). So i took it off and bent it back and took a new one off the other door (same size) and installed the new one. I can now see this one is starting to bend. This only happens on one side and it's the 2nd roller from the top. the garage doors are 10 x 12 with commercial openers. What do i need to do to fix this problem?

Without seeing it its hard to say, but I'd guess it is bending in an up or down direction?

Off hand I would have to think that it must be binding/catching on the track. Make sure that the rollers all have enough room to slide back and forth slightly in the bracket, all the way up in through the travel. You dont want them to be all the way into the bracket, or more than a 1/2 inch or so out of the bracket.

If it is the same roller, it seems too me you have a restriction in the track, like a bolt that has a square head, the bolts that hold the track to the angle are carraige bolts, round heads.

The roller is able to slide back and forth. You are right it's like the roller is bending straight down looking at the door when it is in the up position. Making me think somewhere the track is to low. I did check all the bolts in the track and they are tight and all have round heads. Would a picture of anything help? The only thing getting me is it's only this one roller.

Either call the installer or you can figure it out yourself.

Straighten the roller out and put it back in.

Disconnect the carriage and open the door manually keeping an eye at the roller that is bending.

At some point in its travel you should be able to feel. hear, or see where it binding.

Been installing overheads for some 20 plus years. Sounds like tracks are set to close to jambs so door pinches where horizontal track and vertical track meet. This will only happen to that panel because that is when the door is tightening up to jamb. If you unhooking opener you won't feel this because of where you lift the door. Opener hooks to top of door thus changing how the door reacts. To fix the problem you need to move tracks out away from jamb, must unwind torsion springs to take load off tracks. Then reset outside weather strip, push against outside off panel then have weather strip just barely touch panel then fasten it. Door should be able to float in and out when closed. Then only thing it should touch is the weather strip. Door was installed to tight, a common mistake.

Jgeatz,

Given what you suggest I don't understand why he has to loosen the springs. Shouldn't the work you suggest be possible without doing that? How about just moving the track out a smidgen, possibly by measuring the side that doesn't bind and then making the other side the same? I'm just wondering.

Thanks

Tom

As I was looking at it when the garage door is shut the roller is bending towards you and the shaft the roller is on is bending towards the door. Wouldn't that mean the track should be moved closer to the jambs. I would think if the door was installed to tight the roller would be angling towards the door and the shaft the roller is on bending towards the inside/you?

Yes S.T. as I look at it the door is pretty tight against the jamb and the track is to far out. I think the reaon is the garage door opener is attached close to there and is pushing that pannel up to tight, further then the track wants to let the door go. I think i may need to do some adjusting on the arm for the garge door opener, but I had to go to the kids choir consert tonight and didn't see if their was adjustment that can be made.

It could be the door opener is trying push the door too far closed. That would be adjusted on the opener. There should be a way to adjust the travel. I am sure there are different ways on different brands, but mine has an up(open)travel and a down(close) travel screw for adjusting.

In reading your last post I think surface tension is on the right track. Roller is in wrong hole or you have the wrong hinge number in that location. If its a 2" thick door with 2" rollers and track it should be a #5 hinge. Roller should go in the holes farthest away from door this stages the track out so when door goes up it pulls away from jamb.

I think I may have found the problem. I checked the numbers on the hinges and it has a number 4 on the hinge. The funny thing is one the other side that hinge says number 5. Then I checked the other door that doesn't have a problem and it too has a 4 and a 5 hinge on it in the same spots.
