I picked up my boy a deer license and he is only 9 and it printed it out no problem. Now i found out its 10. Then they should make it so you wouldnt be able to get a license then. I dont care he shoots a gun better than me and very safe. One gun in the stand he will be right next to me and he is going to do the shooting

I think it states in the regs, that when a child is ready to hunt is up to the parents. I also think that it is legal for them to be with a parent & shoot a deer on stand. The way I understood it was that they aren't suppose to get their own tag until 10.

No they're saying is that he can shoot at age 10, but its up to the parent when the kid is mature enough AFTER THAT DATE.

I'm sure its not legal before age 10.

My kid at 10 is ready, but no he's not going yet, making him wait and I don't feel the least bit sorry for him or any other, he needs to go through gun safety training etc. 1st the way it should be not just another pool of license $ for the state. I don't like the 10 year old whatever law whatever, I feel it great they come with an adult for 2-3 years before it's on them to make a great shot with a high powered weapon. I'm ok with the law but think it's kind of a crock.

I wish this would have been around when I was a kid. I could have sat on stand with my dad for a few years to learn a thing or two. The way I did it, i was set in my own stand at 12 years old in the middle of the state forest scared [bleep]less. Granted I did take gun safety, and read a bunch of things about deer hunting before hand. but its still not the same as learning with someone

My oldest grandson is 14, and this is the first year we had to opportunity for me to take him deer hunting (hockey, schedule, etc.) and even thouhg he has shot rifles, and he duck hunts, we will be sitting togehter in blind with one rifle. I'll let him shoot, and he has the $13 license and all, but I agree that some time with experienced hunter is a good thing before letting kids hit the woods for big game. He's gotten big, and so have I wink so it might be tight fit, haha! Good luck!

Hey good luck guys, that's just it there isn't a glass slipper for this subject, it will work for some and not for others, there is no magic age, we just all have to do it right by our own situations. When kids hit 10 they sometimes are torn between growing up and living in that make believe world known as being a kid. Still love there cartoons or whatever but yet are out helping cut wood an hour later, safety first and second, proof of being ready, and our observations will help us decide readiness. T Minus 18 hours.

Not quite the same as hunting deer, but I shot my first duck by my dad's side when I was 5 years old. I used a side by side .410 to do the deed. I sat in the stand with him or my grandpa since I could walk...ya gotta start kids out on the right foot and show them the ropes for a few years before just turning them loose in my opinion...
