What is this critter?

That is a fischer... depending on the size (hard to tell in the picture.) I hunt in douglas co. and saw one a couple years ago two different times. The one I saw was bigger thanan otter. At first I thought it was a small wolverine. That was the first time I had ever encountered one in the wild. I didn't realize they were around central MN.

it just seems a little big for a mink but could be. mink usualy get to be 24 inches as far as i know. now that i see them by the salt block mink would be more likely and i see you have more than one. adult fishers are normaly loners to my understanding but i'm no expert. i have seen pine martins but very few fishers [mostly up on the gunflint and one at bearhead state park]. good luck.

Here's my 2c so take it for what it's worth. grin

There's no way that's an otter and it's too small to be a Fisher, unless it's a juvenile but IMO the shape of the head is all wrong to be an Otter or a Fisher.

I'd say it's a Pine Marten. Regardless of species, you will tend to find color variations. Some more so than others.

Oberg, have you ever really seen a Wolvering in MN? I copied this statement off a site on the net. The last positive record of a

wolverine in Minnesota was from 1922 in Itasca County. ... Not sure if it's true or not. It would be cool to see one. cool

Every picture I have seen of martens when I have googled it, they have a throat patch thats much lighter. And the fur isnt as dark. Not to say color phases cant be a part of the wild, but I dont see marten being a possibility.

i gooled martins, fishers, and minks and the two possible critters that come close to that picture is a young fisher as some have said or large mink. martins do have a lighter head area and neck as you say but again is that when they mature or at all age levels. got a good thread here for all us experts. good luck.

i said marten by process of elimination, its not an otter, too big for a mink, so its either a marten or a fisher. If its a fisher , it'd have to be a juvenile. I've seen marten pictures and one in the wild that didn't have very much lighter color on the face or chest. So thats why I'm sticking to marten

I agree with fisher. Send these pictures to Scott Craven, Wildlife Ecologist at University of Wisconsin, Madison. He's not hard to find if you google him. He will answer your email and give you good information. He's answered similar questions for me. I listen to him the 1st Wednesday of every month on WPR: 11:00-12:30. We get WPR here in Duluth. Always interesting.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
