Gun Mounted Camera

Recommended Posts

I'll be buying a camera mount for my gun to film hunts this year and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this. I have a $600 HD video camera and I'm afraid the internals could get damaged by the recoil from my .308. I don't think cameras are made to take punishment like that. Help!

I been thinking the same... I mounted my camera to my bow and the shock from my bow shuts off my camera so that didnt work... I was thinking the same to mount a camera to my shotty but that recoil is more than a 308 i would assume knowing how recoil is on my TC encore pistol in 308 vs the shotty. I wonder how ppl on youtube film theirs it seems like its gun mounted cuz some vids you see the front half of the firearms being used just wonder how they do it tho. i wouldnt put my $600 camers on my shotty ever! unless its some over thaught design to obsorb recoil on the camera other than that i would try to think of some hatcam or like a shoulder mounted cam

You can pick up a pretty basic camera arm that mounts to a tree for around $40-50. Plenty more expensive options if you want somethign a little nicer. They probably aren't as conveinent as a gun or bow mounted camera but you shouldn't have to worry about breaking anything and the camera going crazy right after the shot.

I'd also probably go with the tree mounted option. I'd think that the recoil would cause the barrel and then camera to rise up a little taking your target out of frame. Also the sudden movement caused by the recoil will be picked up on camera making it nothing but a blur.

You may be able to get a camera to compensate for this but I'd guess it would be fairly expensive.

The other option would be to maybe look for a small camera that can mount to your hat. That should give you some of the same perspective without the shock from the recoil.

If you are looking for a great camera for hunting you have to go with the GoPro! I work in the TV industry and we use these all they time at your major network. It is the best bang for your buck, cause the quality is amazing.

They video there is all shot with a GoPro when I was on a shoot for the Outdoor Channel this past spring. Hope it works cause its embedded on an FB page. Let me know if you can't see it. The camera was mounted on the gun for some of the shots.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
