Texas relocation?

After being laid off in '09, I might have a job offer that will relocate me to Houston, Texas. Never lived outside of MN. Wondering if anyone has lived there and give me some insight on the area. How does one cope with 100+ degree heat day after day all summer. We got some info like cost of living there is about 5% less than here. Some have said it's about a redneck area you can live at, lol. How diverse is the community? Just want to solicit any comments good/bad about the area. I still need to talk to the VP of company and get more details about job and other things.

I have a cousin who relocated there about 4 years ago. He don't like it so much with the heat but his wife hated Minnesota winters. He is making big bucks with the RR so I am sure he will tough it out for a few more years before returning to God's country.

you get use to the heat, i live in az where the temps are much hotter than houston however the humidity is far greater in houston due to the water. You will rely on the a/c much more and hope that the car you bought has it. to me it is just like winter, it comes in gets hot then cools off.

Congrats on the opportunity first!!

I don't know what it would be like to not see leaves change, play in the snow during christmas, or get that "feeling" of the ice leaving the lake and boats coming out, while trees are changing. Me personally I CANNOT stand snakes so that might be the main turnoff for me. They have BIG DEADLY ones!! However I firmly believe that when an opportunity comes like this, you at least owe it to yourself and/or family to try it! After all, you NEVER know what the future holds.

If you're single you'll be happy there. The ladies of TX amazing.

Personally I wouldn't be happy because of the heat and humidity. But if I were in your situation I'd jump on it too. Like they said you don't have to live there forever if you don't like it.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, snakes and other poisonous critters are a concern. Neighbor grew up there and said roaches are a problem no matter how clean you are. I just got remarried earlier this year and in the midst of moving into her townhome and starting our life together. So I'll have to just look at the TX beauties. Maybe if my son decides to move there, which I doubt, I think his head would be on swivel, lol. As far as my spanish, natta, however, my wife understands it and speaks it. Yes, friends have said this sounds like a fun opportunity for us and it doesn't have to be forever. One of the first things my son said, and I thought about, is I might have to get a bigger boat with having big resovoirs and lakes there. I think he just wants my boat to use here, lol.

You have been offered a marvelous opportunity!! Texas is a totally different world than Minnesota and your horizons are about to be broadened considerably!! People from all over the world in Houston. Fresh ideas untainted by Minnesota stodginess. No lutefisk! Gourmet restaurants....ethnic eatin' places...coastal fishing which is totally different than running around our fresh water lakes. Cloastal duck hunting if your interested. Hurricanes! Fire ants! People who don't speak Swedish or Norwegian but DO speak Texan!! Lower prices on almost everything and huge selections. Cockroaches. Rednecks and Xtreme Rednecks. Lotsa warm friendly Texas folks.

You're gonna love it and when (if) you come back you'll be a different person. Don't worry about the heat. It's the humidity that'll kill ya!!

San Antonio is a fine area as well. I have many friends from South of San Antonio and yes, it is hot, but you adapt. It's no different than someone from there having to move here and get cold skin! Think of the days we walk out now in January and say, hmmmm, it's not too bad out today. To them, 55 degrees is freezing. San Antonio is big enough for city living, the river walk, sports teams, and yet close enough to rural living that you can soak up your hick side too. I don't mind it, and would consider it.

Wife and I responded that we would go there too. So I am awaiting a job offer. That's what I've been hearing about San Antonio being a nicer city. Can't escape the heat in TX just like you can't escape the cold here. I am kinda looking forward to moving before the real cold sets in here. Always wondered what it would be like to live in a warm climate during our winters. I am trying not to get too excited until I hear when can I start. Been let down too many times hoping a job offer would come my way.

Hey bucketmouth64, I understand about wanting to manage expectations (That's some great corporatespeak, eh?) and just hold on until something definite is in hand. I don't like to speak for others, but we're all pulling for you.

Please keep us posted.

Take a look at the crime statistics for Houston. Not the best. Not sure about San Antonio. My son has lived in Dallas the last 10 years and he likes it. 30 minute drive to work-60 minutes home. To me everything like grocery stores etc. are 30 minutes away but if I were laid off I would probably do anything to provide for my family.

Good Luck!!

Mike

Well, I'd be willing to bet you 100 to 1 that you are absolutely gonna love southern winters. Not like, not like a lot, but absofreakinlutely love them. I lived in Dallas for 6 years and if it weren't for family, we (wife and I) would have never moved back to Mn. When I would come back for holidays, my relatives would invariably ask, "don't you miss the changing of the seasons?" and I'd reply, not as much as I love golfing in February.

Congrats on the new job and although I never spent any time in San Antonio (other than driving through), I'm sure you'll adjust just fine.

Hi'yall. Just got back last night from San Antonio, TX. And I am glad to report that I was offered the job! Was wined/dined for a couple days and found out yesterday I have a position there. Details need to be worked out when I start, but estimates are 2-3 weeks. We will have to go thru our belongings and start purging/selling things we don't want to take down. I am glad/sad at the sametime not having lived outside MN. The amount of lakes is nothing like here. Nearest lakes/resovoirs to bass fish are at least an hour or more away. And with their drought many water levels are way down. It feels good to be back in the workforce since '09 and I can finally drop the two parttime jobs.

Great to hear. Hit a few Texas Tanks and find you some bass! Tanks are what they call ponds. Many cattle pasture tanks are full of bass and some gills in those parts. I have friends down by Cuero about 90 miles away and a couple that fish the Colorado by Austin. Plenty of pals down on the coast and near Coletto Creek Reservoir by Victoria Texas that brag up the fishing pretty good. Let me know if you want to give those area's a whirl.
