Remote Starter for Truck

Recommended Posts

Im thinking about bitting the bullet and getting a starter for my truck.

Wondering if any of you have had experince getting one, or what you might have or recommand. I have a i phone, so wondering if thats worth it or not as well.

I guess im looking for past experience and recommandations.

Thanks

BNS

They can be a real nightmare if they are not installed correctly. We took many of them out because peoples vehicles were doing all sorts of crazy things.

Most of the time they are fine though. My only advice is have a reputable shop that specializes in that type of service do it. Paying a little extra is not a bad deal when your'e having this done.

I always had Dealer Automotive Services install them for us and never had any problems.

I had a Compustar installed in my F150 that my wife drives to work. Only bad thing about it is that the truck went thru A LOT OF GAS last winter because she used it ALL the time!! Kind of like a kid with a new toy. No problems at all wish I would have had one years ago. The one we have even sends a signal to the remote that the vehicle is running. Nice option if you can't see the vehicle running.

Do not price shop this job. A bad install will only aggravate and cost you plenty down the road. I would ask to see under the dash on a current or recent install. If things look neat and orderly and there are NO scotchlocks in sight you may have found the right place. If you see a bulging mass of crazy wires everywhere, RUN!

What kind of truck do you have? i have the oem from dodge and it is nice when it is 115 to start the car and let it run to cool it off and bring oil up along with water temp before my 50 mile drive to or from. I will be interested to see how it works in the desert winter where it can get to the low 20's when i leave for home. that will help with the oil and water temps. I would only recommend an oem or reputable installer. from issues i have heard aftermakets can cause you more trouble than it is worth.

I've had a AstroStart in my GMC since it was new and it's been flawless,my GM dealer installed it. AstroStart does have the remote start system via smartphone but I have no experience with those. I don't think you'll have much trouble finding a dealer in your area if you're interested.

thanks for the help!! i just wnat to make sure if im ging to be spending this money that its good. iv heard alot of bad stories.

Being a mechanic I have seen many go bad. In fact almost every vehicle I have found had one, had some sort of an issue with them. Although to be fair, I wouldnt have known it had a remote start, if it wasnt in for a some concern or another.

Just whatever you do stay away from the big box stores. That's where most of those stories begin! Find a professional shop to do the install.

I started this exact same post one month ago in this forum. Same responses too. This morning my wife and I finally dropped of her car to get a remote start/keyless entry installed at DAS in Hopkins. The quote is $450 installed, which is right about what I expected. Then again if it makes Mrs. SkunkedAgain happy then it's worth twice as much!

im still trying to swallow the fact of dropping 500 bucks on a starter.

Don't forget about the zero mpg when in use. Excessive idling isn't the best thing for your vehicle either.

Neat, convenient, and probably one of the least "green" auto accessories ever...

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
