Do we really need 47 different soft plastic baits in the box???

One of my goals this is year is to thin out my inventory of soft plastics. It's amazing what those long winters can do to your supply!! I have put a BUYING FREEZE on all plastic baits until I have used up a good chunk of what I currently have. I am convinced that once you get on active fish, bait selection becomes a lot less important so why not just use say the five baits that you have the most confidence in? In fact, over the course of an entire season, you might catch more fish if you limit yourself to just your five most effective baits.

This would be my list:

1. Stick Bait (Senko)

2. Tubes

3. Beaver Style (Sweet Beaver)

4. Single Tail Grub

5. Ribbon Tail Worm

Curious what others list of 5 would be.

I dont even think I can make an overall top 5. I would probably have a hard time making a top 5 for drop shot alone! BUT if I had to pick 5 plastics to take with me not knowing what kind of fishing I would be doing this would be it:

1. Reaction Innovations Beaver

2. Senko

3. Yamamoto shad shape worm

4. Rage Tail Craw

5. Ring Fry

If I think about this a little harder my selection would probably change.

Alright so we have:

1. tubes

2. flukes

3. curly tails

4. swimbaits

and now within these I need at least 3 light colors and 3 dark colors. With tubes its 3 light, 3 med/brownish, and 3 dark. With flukes its 4 light/natural and 3 dark. It's more for patterning than anything else.

This would probably be more applicable for musky anglers or for our crankbait boxes...

Hiya -

I'm trying to narrow down the plastics selection too.

If I could have only 5:

- grubs

- tubes

- Beaver-style

- 7" ribbon tail worm

- Senko-type

In addition to the above, I also carry some drop shot baits, straight-tailed worms, Brush Hog type baits, and trailers and craws.

Main thing I'm trying to do is get rid of colors I don't need, and narrow it down to a few for each style. Sometimes with smallie baits like tubes and grubs that goes out the window though.

The amount of plastics I carry in the boat is probably over the top. The amount I have in my basement is flat out obnoxious...

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

- ribbon tail worms

- lizards

- flukes

- ringworm with curly tail for jig worm set up

- senko type worms

Every year I say I am going to just use up what I have, but that never seems to happen. I always buy some more!

I have way to many plastics but most are for jiggin eyes and what is in my arsenal for bass is

tubes

power worms

senkos

now Ive narrowed down what types but there are so many colors

you could have three types and 15 plus different colors but I think my go to color is green pumpkin always seems to work

BTW what your favorite way to store your plastics in the boat

Hiya -

I have really tried to narrow down the colors the last couple seasons. For the most part I'm down to 3-5 colors per bait type - sometimes less.

- grubs: (4" & 5" for smallies) smoke, clear/black flake, pearl white, school bus yellow, and a couple top secret colors I ain't sayin nuthin about wink (I could probably end that list at "smoke" and be just fine...)

- tubes: sand, green pumpkin/copper, green pumpkin/purple, watermelon/gold, smoke/silver

- Beavers: watermelon/red, Bama bug, sunfish, black neon

- Brush hogs: watermelon/red, Bama bug, sunfish, black neon

- ribbontail worms: pumpkinseed, watermelon, june bug

- jig trailers: watermelon, green pumpkin, black, black/blue

- senko-type: blue/white laminate, June Bug, sunfish, green pumpkin/copper, black neon

Storing them in the boat: I have a two part system. I have a deep 3600-size box I keep on the deck with a bag or two of each type in my favorite colors. I use deep 3600- and 3700-size boxes with baits organized by type (creatures, drop shot, trailers, grubs and tubes, worms) that have more colors, and I use it to restock the on deck box when I need to. I used to use the Falcon speed bags, which were ok, but they always end up in a big heap in a storage locker I'd have to paw through to find what I wanted, and I got tired of forgetting to zip them back up and having them spill all over...

haha. I was just thinking the same thing. I keep mine in a small rubbermaid tote. kinda ridiculous. my five would be,

1. senko in green pumpkin, and black and red flake

2. yamamota craw in green and brown colors.

3. some sort of beaver bait in blue and purple.

4. tube. brown and green pumkin.

5. some off brand skinny worm i bought like 300 for real cheap. they work great for shaky heading.

1. Beaver style baits.

2. senkos

3. Brush hogs/creature baits

4. 7" power worms

5. Tubes, even though I never use them

I put mine in zip lock bags separated by style then in a tote that is about 16" wide by 24" long and about 8" high.

Works great, except I have to many.

Have you found those panic minnows at any stores or just online?
