Favorite JIgs?

Recommended Posts

A quick question for all you walleye fanatics. What is your favorite type of jig and what size do you use in the springtime? Being I'm asking everyone else, I'll tell you mine. I would have to say a 1/8 ounce jig, chartruese in color with a chartruese twister tail. Thanks for any replies. Goodluck fishin its only a short time away.

I prefer to use the tried and true, the good ol' Fireball when fishing with live bait. I mainly use 1/8 ounce in water less than 10 feet, 1/4oz. in water between 10 and 20 feet deep and 3/8 for about anything deeper. In river I prefer to use a bit heavier than usual jig to remain in contact with the bottom.

I prefer 1/8 oz also .. but not the fireball type jigs. The short shank jigs tend to shake the bait loose more often unless they are stuck through the skull... I prefer my minnows alive.

Orange, Chartreuse, Green, and Black are my favorites .. with the odd ball Pink and white day.

Jighead tipped with a Leech or 1/2 crawler is hard to beat once the water temps reach the mid 50's, minnows when its 50 or below.

Blue glow or pink glow Phelp's half-face jigs tipped with a minner' or a leadhead in blue chart. with a minnow, I agree, alive is best! I will go as small as possible in any given situation. Mike W. hit the depths perfectly!

Gopher tackle jigs are my favorite for any situation from crappie to bass to walleye. They have a far superior hook to Northland and other brand jigs, the paint is very good and the eyelets are not painted shut. Great jig. Hard to find but look around and you will find them. They are a little hidden gem.

We have them here in the Brainerd area since they are made up near Crosby.

For the river, I prefer Northlands Lipstick jigs. They stand up and keep the minnow above the bottom. They also have double barbs that really keeps bait on and fish on.
For lakes, I use the larger Demons (blaze orange color best)baited with a large crawler. Just hook the crawler thru the very front tip just like you would a lindy rig and cast it out and let it sink all the way to the bottom and slowly sweep it in towards you. Don't hop-jig this, just small sweeps toward you slowly.
Good Luck!

My favorite jigs JR's round head jigs. They have decent mustad hooks and tough paint that holds up after bouncing on rocks.

The water I fish is turbid so an added adtraction of rattles and glow gets the fishes attention.
I like the 1/8 ounce for pitching to the shallows in the low light periods and depending on the current up to 3/8 ounce for verticle jigging the holes during the day.
I usually slide on Catch-n Tackle Ring-n Grubs, ringworms,or Power Grubs for both verticle jigging and pitching.

I like to start with a 1/8 oz fireball jig when casting and when I'm vertical jigging I will start with a 1/4 oz pretty regularly. It mainly depends on the wind speed and how much contact I have with the bottom.

And keep those hooks sharp!

Yep, a JR's Rattle Jig and a Chartreuse White Core Ring-N-Grub caught a lot of bass this past weekend. Also a great combination for those walleyes smile.gif

A few more victims of the Rattle Jig and Ring-N-Grub...

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
