Which? Terrova or PD w/ iPilot?

Griggs

Question

I'm looking to get a new trolling motor for my 17' Lund Mr Pike SS. Right now I have a 24v 70 lbs Minn Kota v1. I'm looking to replace it with either a 24v 70 lbs V2 with iPilot or a 24v 80 lbs Terrova w/o AP or iPilot. I found some deals where they are similarly priced.

Anybody have any opinions?

Terrova too. Why no ipilot? Is it due to cost? Believe me, you'll love the thing and wonder how you fished before without it. I've got the terrova 24v 80 lb thrust with ipilot. If i had to choose between keeping the ipilot or my hbird sideimaging unit, I keep the ipilot. Love the spot lock feature esp. Rarely ever anchor anymore.

I found a god deal on a Terrova but it doesn't have i pilot. So thats kind of the question, Terrova or i pilot?

One question about the Terrova pedal. Is there a button on the pedal for spot lock? Or do you have to use the remote. I feel like I'd rather use my foot

The spot lock function is on the remote only, it's not on the foot pedal.

For me personally, I'd go with the Terrova w/o the i-Pilot, but try to add the i-Pilot somewhere down the road. It's about a $350 add-on.

I like the PDV2, but I would not want to buy a motor that was remote control only, w/o a foot pedal.

If you want, shoot me an email or a PM and we can try to beat the deals you already found on these motors.

I agree with perchjerker. I'd go with the better newer motor in the Terrova. Though I believe you'd save money by getting one with ipilot factory installed already vs. adding it later down the road. If not, at least you can always add it later.

Me personally I only use the remote. Love it! Not tied to the bow of the boat to operate the trolling motor. Awesome if you have kids or other people in the boat, so you are not limited to being in the bow area.

Best of luck! It might hurt the pocketbook now, but if you can, try and get the ipilot with the Terrova. See what perchjerker and others can offer you.

+2 with going with the I-pilot, either added on to your good deal, or as a complete Terrova w/ Ipilot. The I-pilot is definately the best $400 I've ever spent fishing. I added one on to my father for closer to what PerchJerker is talking, and it literally took me 5 minutes. Very, very easy.

Having a Terrova 80 w/o Ipilot would be like having a chocolate chip cookies w/o milk.

Regarding the PD...It steers considerably slower, and you don't have the foot pedal as an option. I like the choice and "back-up" in case the hand held battery dies or craps out. IE- Better motor + Insurance. good luck....

When you guys refer to not having a pedal on the v2, you mean for ipilot I assume?

I really wish the spot lock was on the pedal. I would want to use the remote as little as possible... That said, i pilot still worth it?

PerchJerker, message incoming!

I won't fish without my I Pilot, yes they are that good. I use both the remote and pedal since I stand and cast 99% of the time. My fishing/casting times almost doubled with the I Pilot over my old Maxxum Pro due to the Terrova doing 90% of the work and me not having to fight the Maxxum any more. No issues working into a 20 mph wind if needed and boat stays on course with the GPS enabled auto pilot leaving me alone to cast with only a tap of the pedal now and again or a click of the remote to fine tune speed/direction between casts.

Ya, even though pushing that spotlock button is a major PITA, it's worth it. (tongue in cheek). Why so insistant on this?? You push the button and done. Push it again, and go on your way with the pedal.

Yes, with the V2, you only have the hand held Ipilot. No option of the pedal.

I just think it makes more sense to have a button on the pedal. My foot will already be using it. But maybe it will just take some getting used to. I guess the answer to my question is to go with the Terrova and go for the ipilot if/when I can.

Also, if you have ipilot, do you automatically have autopilot?

I got the PD V2 with i-Pilot on my boat; I went with the PD V2 because I didn't want to spend the extra cash on the Terrova. The Terrova is better, but having the pre-installed i-Pilot was non-negotiable. Gotta have it. If your choice is between a Terrova without i-Pilot or a PD V2 with i-Pilot, you gotta go with the PD with i-Pilot. That's not even close. If you can swing the Terrova with i-Pilot, go for it.

What he said.

If you can swing the Terrova with i-Pilot, go for it.

I went cheap with the V2 I-Pilot. Saturday, third time out, the left button on the remote quit working. I had no steering and no foot peddle to save the day.

Spring for the Terrova if possible so you have a back-up steering option.

The spot lock function is on the remote only, it's not on the foot pedal.

If I were on the design team, I would push to add the Spot Lock also to the foot pedal functionality.

I see many times when you may be using the footfeet and then wish to lock and run on the boat without having the I-Pilot right at hand. I would vote for that to be configured into a new foot contole along with the Track Record funtion also from the foot controle.

Ya never know....maybe that is already in the works for a new Wireless I-Pilot Foot Control option for the Terrova line?

I just bought the Terrova with I pilot 80 lbs, and wish I would of had one 10 years ago. Well worth the money. I was worried about the size of the remote and after the weekend I can't even tell its around my neck. I would get the biggest size you can afford.
