Mono/Floro/braid- Does it really matter in this situation?

I have always used Green Trilene XL 6lb. on my jigging rod/reel for walleye on the lake I do most of my fishing on. Most of the jigging I do is with 1/4 to 3/8 oz jigs in 6 to 12 feet of stained water. The Trilene seems to do fine. Of course always looking to improve if it will increase my production. Am I wasting money on switching to floro or braid since I am only in this shallow of water? I've been told you dont gain much if you are fishing that shallow.

Yeah, the way your fishing, stick with mono... changing it isn't going to make it any better for you (might actually make it worse).

Once you start fishing for different species (Bass, muskie, pike, etc), then you'll probably want to change up line and technique of course.

I will disagree here on this one. A good Superline like the new Suffix 832 will give you a ton of added feel in your jigging. Since its stained water you can tie direct to your jig. Just back off on the hooksets and drag. Oh and put some mono on your spool and tie the Suffix 832 to it with back to back uni knots. I use superlines for all my jigging now and wont go back to mono for it.

I've never been a fan of fluorocarbon on spinning reels if that's what your using. seems to be to stiff for my liking. I love it on baitcasters. i like to use braid though. mono back like stated above and I never really go heavier than 6 pound test. Mono will work just fine. I just prefer the no memory and no stretch of the braid. purely my preference though.

If you are using that heavy of a jig in six foot, are you fishing fast? 3/8 oz. even in 12 ft is very heavy for a lake, heck even a river. Tipped with a 5" swimbait I would go with braid and clear 3' leader of mono/flouro. Minnow/crawler; mono. Braid comes into play on long casts and deep water so you don't lose the feel of the jig. Mono will cast jigs farther, but you lose the feel on a long cast. Overwhelming isn't it? My go to producing size jig is 1/16 oz. in the depths you've described. Can I ask what you are tipping with? Maybe I could be more help.

Sounds to me like a good situation for mono. Shallow water, moderatly light jigs...I use superlines for some things, but prefer to use/handle mono unless I see a clear advantage to braid.

I would be useing a high quality rod in this situation, so no need for any more sensitivity.

Hotime-The size of the jig I go with depends on the wind. 3 foot waves = 3/8 oz jig for me. I am not casting and jigging back. It is all stright down presentation. I can't stand vertical jigging with my line dragging 6 feet back. I like to be stright up and down as much as possible. Ideal conditions I use 1/4 oz. Not sure I could feel the bottom with a 1/16 oz jig in 10 feet of water with 3 foot wave's pounding me in the front of the boat running the trolling motor. I tie direct to the jig. My dad ties a swivel on his 3 feet up but still goes mono to mono. He does this only to keep the twisting to a minimum. I did use a braid jigging on Rainy Lake with my brothers rod in 20-30 feet of water and there is no doubt you can feel the fish better and I just tied the braid direct to the jig and it didnt seem to matter.

Stick with the mono. I don't see any advantages to using braid in that situation, but do see some disadvantages to using it. If you are fishing 12' or less of water, vertically, you won't have a bit of trouble feeling whats going on down there with mono.

This weekend I'll be fishing the same depths of water. For a slower, more vertical presentation I'll be using 6lb XL, when I'm moving fast, fishing far behind the boat, and snap jigging, I'll be using 8 lb XL. Next weekend when I'm fishing 45' down for Lakers in Canada, I'll be using 10lb XL or 12lb Pline. I very rarely use braids anymore.
