PORKY'S on Uni, is closing this Sunday! :-(

Recommended Posts

Well the last Porky's around town is closing this Sunday, you may want to take the Rod out for one more ride! wink Long history of the Porky's on Lake street in our family. All three of my sisters worked there back in the '70's. I use to drive my first car a '66 Fastback Mustang through on Fri & Sat nights! Man that was the day, sophomore in high school with a high performance 289 4 barrel! If I could turn back the clock! frown Maybe running by Sat evening with the Bro-in-law for one more Whora! cool

Went down Sat, for one last high fat meal! Waited in line for about 1 1/4 hrs before I got to the door, but what the heck I'll go jog it off tonight! Sounds like I missed all the good burn out fun on Sunday night. To bad they couldn't have rebuild it some where's else? frownfull-27051-7407-picture140.jpg

I was down there Saturday night and it was a epic night. I am big into cars and have been to a lot of events but I have never seen that many burnouts. It truly is a bummer as I spent just about every weekend night down there that I could. So I guess we will see where the car crowd ends up this summer. I wish my car was ready to drive cause i would have been in on the fun but it just came as such a surprise that I couldn't fix it fast enough frown . Oh well at least the last night I was down there went out in a proper way.

Oh WoW! Had no clue. Kind of a bummer but sign of the times I guess. In fact I am amazed it hung on so long. The following must have not been what it used to be? Even if I had known I would have still went down for one last burger. No the rod though. Still wrapping up on some interior stuff after a total redo last summer and this winter. Figured they would have held out till June, so must be a money issue?

From what I can tell they still did OK with the whole money thing. It sounded to me like they were just trying to get out of the business and the way they have uni torn up can't help business so if they were just making ends meet it was going to end up a loss by the end of summer. It sounds like the msra and the state historical society are going to try and do something with it but who knows.

My talon is under the weather with some strut tower repair otherwise its running like a champ. I would have been barking fire out of the exhaust and trying a AWD burnout if I could have gotten it down there wink . It's really sad I couldn't get one last run down there but I guess maybe its time for a exciting new spot to cruise at.

They sold the property a while back. There is some mumble jumble relocation talk going on. They were possibly going to move the whole building or part of it to another location.

I know they had an auction Monday and some of the car clubs were interested in buying the Porky signs and other memorabilia. .

Not a lot Toyota's at this one Boy's!....U.S.A... grin

They opened the new shop in NE Mpls and the food was good. Then they got shut down because the neighborhood folks were opposed to Porky's in the first place. There was lots of finger pointing and then they closed.

It may have not helped them in that location if a lot of the would-be customers around the area don't eat Pork!

Steve Bauer and his family announced Monday that they are bringing the longtime St. Paul landmark restaurant, Porky's, to the Little Log House Pioneer Village.

Bauer and his wife, Sylvia, and their family operate the village on Highway 61 between Miesville and Hastings. They will add Porky's to their collection of buildings.

Porky's operated as a popular drive-in diner on University Avenue until April 3, when it closed.

"It's such an important part of the community," he said Monday. "To see this thing go into a Dumpster, it's not what should be done to stuff like this. The memories aren't something you can just make up. They were built in here. There are all kinds of stories."

Bauer said he met a Twin Cities man named Tim Dowd who met his wife at Porky's 52 years ago.

"She waited on him, and he thought she was sort of a cute little girl," Bauer said. "He asked her out, and asked her what time she got off work. Three months later, he proposed to her in that parking lot.

"It's just stuff like that (that made us want to save the building)."

The main Porky's sign was not part of the sale, but several other pieces of the restaurant will make their trip to Hastings in addition to the building. The restaurant will not be operating as a restaurant, but will be dismantled, put back together and brought to life in time for the Antique Power Show, set for July 29-31.

The Little Log House Pioneer Village is located south of Hastings off Highway 61 at 220th Street.
