Good shooting mrklean!

The last time I punched out on the first day, I regretted it and told myself I'd never fill up so fast again. The next year, I was selective and passed on a slamdunk double and wound up regretting it. I've figured out that you better cash-in on your opportunities or risk coming home empty. Happy to see you made the right choice - congrats!

Work has been crazy this week so i haven't had time to sit down and give the recap of the trip yet but here we go. We pulled into Rich's place at about 4 in the afternoon on Friday opening day, headed to the blinds right away Rich and I went back to the blind where i shot my Tom last year because he was seeing tons of birds go through there all day. As we walked up to the blind there was a big Tom right on the other side of the trees but he could see us coming and walked off. Sat there about a little over an hour with nothing then 2 jakes came in dropped the second one, about 15 min later a group of 6 hens and a Tom came in dropped him season was done in just under 2 hours. About 20 min later another group of hens and a big Tom came in, i texted my buddy Luke to come sit in that blind because he wasn't seeing anything really in his blind, he thought i was joking so he said he was fine, well we didn't want to scare anything out of there because they roost about 50 yards from that blind so we walked to the truck, about 75 yards from the truck were 4 big Toms all strutting out with hens, we sat next to the truck for half an hour calling to them and doing gobble calls on our phones just to make them mad is was pretty funny, they had to have seen us but they kept strutting. Next morning i still wanted to go out just to sit in the blinds and relax, had two nice toms and 7 hens come in, i was texting Luke to see if they were seeing anything or any shots and all he said was yeah were seeing lots. Don't know if any of you guys remember last year but he was 2 for 7 on his shots not good. Well they picked me up and there were no birds in the truck he missed 4 times his sight was messed up on his bow. Rich offered Luke his brand new carbon element to use and Luke said no so he tinkered with his bow all afternoon. Went out the afternoon and had 3 toms and 6 or 7 hens around me all night, Luke finally got a Jake (also finally killed something with his bow after 12 years)but he ended up wounding a nice tom, his bow has no kinetic energy at all so he got little to no penetration on the bird, he also only has one arrow left. The morning Rich was going to sit with a 13 year old who was on her first hunt ever so i sat with Luke, the birds were gobbing nonstop around us roosted 50 yards from us. We got there over an hour before sun up so we were both a little tired i could see Luke falling asleep, well just after sun up 2 Jake's come in wondering why he isn't getting his bow ready i look back to see him sleeping i wake him up and he finally gets ready to shoot i have my camera phone ready he draws shoots shot looks good until i look at the video back and low not good, i looked around for almost an hour with no luck another lost bird. No he is our of arrows, but still wants to sit in the blind, we had 3 more toms come in and i asked if he wanted me to shoot one but he said no, even though last year he tagged his 2 Jake's and asked me for one of my tags which i said yes but i wasn't going to argue. Again i had a complete blast there covered in birds, saw lots of deer, found a shed and had some laughs I hope to go back again next year, but after Luke going 3 for 14 and 3 wounded birds in two years i might bring my gf on her first turkey hunt instead.

This was the group that came in right after i shot my birds

We can hunt around feeders down there, its funny sometimes the birds will come to them and sometimes they wont its anyone's guess, most of the time the hens come to them but the toms and jake's usually stay away last year the birds wouldn't come anywhere near them. The 13 year old that was down there sat in the same spots i did and didn't see anything at times. My buddy needs a new bow is what he needs, when he passed up shooting that carbon element i almost punched him in the face.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
