Polarized Sun glasses

I have never tried the Costas but thats because they aren't very friendly to the pocket book, but dont get me wrong if i had the funds I would get a pair immediatly. I have used the classic "$30" pair season after season, but they just don't hold up and I found myself buying new ones each year, so i bit the bullet and bought some oakley's. I decided on the Flak Jacket Livestrong model, with polorized lenses and regular. If anything ever happens to them I'm replacing them right away! they look awesome and are extremely strong and durable. As far as the Maui Jims go I will always have my eye on the "jointless" kalua's but when i can get an awesome pair of Oaks for over half the price, why change..

Anyone tried H3O glasses? I'm curious how easy it is to damage/break the poly lenses when changing between colors.

Been abusing mine now for 5 years, no scratches but I did loose a nose piece last year, was happy to find out they have a lifetime warrenty, they sent me new ones ASAP no questions asked.

My work glasses are Ocean Waves, good but prefer my H3O's

I've used the XL-1 tactical model for shooting as well as fishing and they are outstanding for both protection and shielding the wind. Mine are prescription as well and have held up extremely well for over 2 years now. I'd recommend them.

I got my H3o's at the muskie expo several years ago from Rob Kimm at Esox Angler, mainly to get the custom cowgirl they were giving away grin Love the glasses and that bait holds my personal best to date, my Ocean Waves I picked up from a guy that didnt fit him for cheap. H3O's see about 200 days of use a year, and still in top shape other than replacing the nose pieces last year to y surprise were covered under warrenty yet and sent them out to me free of charge. Ocean Waves I leave on the dash of my truck when I need a pair at work or have an unexpected trip after work and don't have my H3O's along.

I searched and found this old thread.  I just wanted some up to date info from you guys.  I want to buy some good prescription, bifocal, sunglasses with either wraparound or side shields. I want them for fishing, hunting, driving etc.  All of the normal stuff.  What do you recommend.

I usually wear my contacts so I can use regular sunglasses but I am getting tired of contacts.

Your eye doctor can fix you up, or you can go on the internet and get them.    Most of the major sunglass companies also do prescription stuff, through your optometrist.

Your optometrist will give you a copy of your prescription.  You can then shop around.  You will also need to know the "pupil distance" and what frame size you take.

Won't be cheap.

I was doing the same on a few sites online.  Just the lenses, bifocal, hi index, polarized was getting up in the 200 dollar range, not counting the frames.  I am thinking about losing the bifocal.  Nearsighted, so can just take off/lift up glasses for close work.   Save some money.

Ya I see some of the cool Maui Jim frames with a wider side bow to block more sun from the side (which is a big factor for me) are $250.  Then add the best lenses and we are in the $530 range.  The Wileys are about $460 or so.  The glasses I now have turn dark in the sun but that doesn't work when in a car.  And the bows are skinny so when I turn my back to the sun when fishing the sun reflects off the back side of the lens and I don't know till later but it is like welding with no goggles.  (sort of)  I am nearsighted too.  I am going to check out Glacier Glasses.  A friend of mine used to love his.  They have that leather side shield on them.  I will let you know what I find.  My wife says get what you want so am excited to get something I really like but man didn't expect to spend this much.  I am going to chek with my Sanford Eye Clinic too.  Wish I could see theirs online.

I just called my eye clinic.  They said look online at the Maui Jims and the Costa Del Mars.   They handle both and they said that the people who have them love them.  I see the options of  single vision or progressive.  I suppose you know that the progressive is the no line bifocals.  Just thought I would let you know Del.  They also said both companies are very tight with the prices and the online price is probably what they will charge too..   Let me know if you see any sales on either.

As you know you can get polarized and bifocal tinted lenses with the frame of your choice either from your optomotrist or online or from a big box store.  I have always gotten my prescription sunglasses from the eye doctor guy, since I had insurance up until a few years ago.   I would get sunglasses every other year, since my eyes didn't change that much.  Myself, I didn't care for the side blocking since it cut off peripheral vision.  I might have gotten used to it, just never tried.

Do you really need bifocal sunglasses?  I am considering going back to single vision.   I figure if I really need to see close I can take them off.

I had some Carrera sunglasses from the eye doctor that I really liked.  Sort of wrap around.

I've been checking out both sites.  Costa seems to have more of the style that I am looking for and they start at $149 - $169 for the style I am looking for.  They Maui's are over $200 for the same style.  I am looking at the Cat Cay model for $149 and then whatever the prescription is above that.  Fully polarized with wide black frame.  I think I will go with the 580P (plastic) lens.  I have a strong prescription so will get too heavy with glass I think.  I will see what the clinic says too.  I guess I am looking at my Christmas present to myself.  :grin:

I'll spend $100.00 on a pair of sunglasses when the Vikings win the superbowl ! = Never !

LOL

For cheaper sunglasses, look no further then typhoons.  Great shades with a great warranty. However, once you purchase a top tier pair of shades, regardless of brand, you'll never go back. Maui Jim's, Oakley, Costa's  are all very good shades. I drop some bank on Costas and will always purchase expensive shades from now on. I own some cheapies and typhoons for certain situations but as soon as I put them on, I'm regretting not taking my Costa's. The bummer is losing them..and it will happen! I'm going on 4 years with my Costa's so I feel I got my moneys worth.  It's almost like the massage your eyeballs!

Darn! Due to my prescription I couldn't get the Costas or Maui's due to the curve of the lenses.  I did find a frame with a bow that was wide and went with that.  Got the polarized lenses and they put anti reflective on the inside of the lenses so the sun won't reflect off and hit my eyes as much.  LOVE THEM.   So comfortable and great to have sunglasses in the vehicle.  Got the brown lenses too.  Very nice..

I know this is a little late in the convo. but you can get any sunglasses made into prescription sunglasses. im on my 2nd pair of Oakley's. the first time I got them, I went to vision world I think. I forgot which model Oakley's I got, they weren't cheap. but I was driving for work and needed sunglasses. this last time I ordered a different model Oakley's from this place in Colorado. they had a ton of brand named sunglasses on hand, same price Oakley store was asking for my current Oakley prescription sunglasses "crankshaft". my eyes are so bad that I couldn't get them from a local store anymore, so that's why I went with this place in Colorado. they custom made them, with out zero problems. they wrap around my face and I love them. im about due for a new pair, but they are well worth the 300$

never had any other pairs, other then Oakley's.

I buy mine from the mountain and get the warranty have done this for a few years they cover everything plus except loss. so for 20 or 40 bucks I get new ones every year right now. All I do is call before the year is up and send them in and get a check week or two later. I have a pair of costa and love them.
