mthunter
Does anyone know of campground that has group sites? For tents? We are trying to organize a family reunion camping trip and having a hard time finding places to pitch a tent period, much less about 8 of them. Hopefully within 3 hours of the cities but open to all suggestions. No Wifi, swimming pools, hot tubs or fitness centers required this isn't a trip to the spa. All I need is a picnic table, a beach, a dock to tie up the boat at night and a campfire ring. Thanks for any suggestions.
reinhard1
bearhead state park has all that for you. make your reservations as early as possible. i go there 2 or 3 times a year. the group site is away from the general campground. the campground has excelent showers, fish cleaning house ect. also can buy firewood and ice at the rangers office. fishing is great. it is located in ely area, and can check it out on the internet. if you need fishing information just ask. also has 2 trout lakes within the park area. good luck. PiedmontAngler
Savanna Portage State Park has a nice large group site too. Again to guarantee a spot reserve well ahead of time. We stayed there with our kids in a large tent. There is lots of space for multiple tents, etc.
Wish-I-Were-Fishn
+ 1 on Bearhead. 10 mph speed limit but you don't need to go any faster unless you were looking at skiing too.
leech~~
Beaver Creek State park in SE MN is kind of a neat place. Lots of tents sites. We stay there when Turkey hunting.
Xplorer
A bit over your 3 hour limit, but check out the two group sites on Fall Lake just outside Ely. Huge (I think you can have up to 5 rv's there) with their own flush toilet and shower. Private dock on the lake. Check out the reserve america site or just google it. caseymcq
A bit over your 3 hour limit, but check out the two group sites on Fall Lake just outside Ely... That campground has been recently renovated. It is extremely nice. There is also a group site at the Whiteface campground about one hour north of Duluth. I think there are also group sites at Stony Point (Leech Lake) and Norway Beach (Cass Lake).

upnorth
Echo Lake NE of Orr has a decent group campsite and fairly nice campground to boot. No real amenities IE showers and the like, but nice place to get away
Stick in Mud
I also advise you check out the sites on Fall Lake...yes, it's a bit of a drive, but you can go into Ely and buy excessively expensive outdoor gear!
blue_healer_guy
I love the sites in the Chipiwha national forest on cass lake, no group sites that I know off but you would have no problem finding 3 or 4 next to each other. No dock, but we just beach our boats.
Rodbldr4fun
There are a couple of state parks closer to you if you don't want to drive too far. I know Lake Bronson has a lake with a fishing pier. Take a look at the following link that gives you a map. Hit the campground icons and you will get a description.http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/map.html
