how to grunt in deer

Recommended Posts

Im not sure how to do it but when i grunt its a simple contact grunt phase like burrrrp, burp burp, burrrrp..... is this right?

my doe bleat goes meee, meee, meee, meee

thats about all i have done in the woods im kind of scared im scaring deer away rather than calling them in

I only called when i bowhunted or when the woods are not blasting shots everywere

during firearms deer travel more from danger and getting places and moving to corn fields rather than mating and getting into fights during rut time only weekdays when the woods are empty is when i would assume they mate and spar other than that when we are in there firearms hunting its more movement rather than deer activity like rut time mating and sparring

Are you using an actual call or your mouth. I use a true talker, would not even attempt to use my own voice. Just trying to see where youre coming from.

I use a primos still grunter i only use the young deer and mature buck setting on it and for bleats i use a primos original can

I also use only young buck grunt and doe bleats. Any good stories about calling, grunting or rattling out there ? I've had a few deer turn to my spot from grunting them. Never rattled before. Sure is nice to see one going away and grunt a few times and see them turn around and come back.

Bucks make a series of vocals. The deeper and more prolonged grunts from what Iv'e heard have been from mature bucks. Both of these bucks also have snort wheezed at me, so they were in an agressive moods with does present. All the younger bucks I've heard were all grunting more like a muffled pig grunting. If your trying to call deer that you see, its best to look at their posture to see if they hear you or not. Start soft the increase the volume til they acknowledge you, pause for a bit then give it a soft single grunt or a bleat. If they disapear they might circling down wind. So its best to be silent for awhile. Iv'e done better with heavy cover at my back. You never know if theyll pop out within range. If your calling in the wide open you should have a decoy. Calling blind should be done softer. After calling have your bow or gun in your hands ready. True talkers come with a video sometimes thats informative or check out a video HSOforum maybe they'll have actual audio of vocals. Calling is fun and does work but it is risky.

Little tip that StickNString gave me on here a while back. If possible, set your stand up with some type of obstruction behind you, pond, swamp, etc. That way if the big boy tries to circle downwind of you, he can't get totally behind you with you knowing it. Granted alot of guys/gals already have their stands in certain spots, but just food for thought.

so am i doing it right with the

burrrp, burp, burp, burrrp

and the

meee, meee, meee, meee

or is the contact grunt ust a single burrp?

i wanna call in deer not chalenge them and use multiple calls remember when i go hunting the deer travel for food and shelter from danger only they do not move around and mate and spar when everyone is blowing off shots left and right. I only call when theres a long silence in the woods and no shots are being fired

Its hard to say if it sounds right buy using words. Id have to hear it. Like I said before try to find actual audio of deer vocals and mimic that close as you can. If you have a chance to hear one while hunting get that burned in your memory. Young bucks often grunt softly with almost every step sometimes, exact same length, tone and pitch. Hope thats what your trying to get at. When you get a big one that snort-wheezes, extended grunt that goes into clicking within 20yds it will make the hair stand on the back of your neck. Just hope you can control the buck fever for a shot. Had it happen twice, arrowed both and it was just before Halloween both times.

do people make weeze calls with there mouths? ive seen michael waddell do it but it didnt look like he was using a call. Mouth piece? It was almost like he was blowing hard but it wasnt an actual grunt. Is that to like challenge the deer to a fight? ill try and post a video of him doing it later if no one knows what im talkin about haha

There are calls out there for snort-wheeze. You can do it without one but it takes a little practice. That sound I believe is done through the bucks nose. Dont get it confused with the alarm blow that you normally here when you get busted. This call is a challenge call, usually mixed in with rattling after.

You may have to copy and paste these links (hope it is legal to post links for recordings of live deer) in order for them to work.

Here is a live recording of a Tending Grunt, you will see the doe he is wanting to "Tend" off to the right.

Here is a young doe doing a wheeze and stomp...notice how many times in a row she wheezes.

Snort and wheeze, and at 50 seconds you hear a couple soft grunts that border on a wheeze.

If you want to know how badly you can mess up your call and still sound like a deer, listen to this doe calling her baby. The fawn in front of the camera bleets for the first 30 seconds with the doe in the background in reply, then from 30 seconds on it looks and sounds like it is all momma.

I snort with my nose and have a wheeze internal mouth call and a True Talker Grunt.

Good luck

I like to use two short to mid range grunts, if that doesn't get their attention then I try a deeper longer grunt. The less calling you do the better IMO, if you are blowing that thing every 15 minutes you are pretty much sending out a homing beacon, telling every deer where you are.

I agree with Bear55, depending on the circumstance you use a few choice blows on what ever you are using, but frequency has got to be "seldom is better". Even though you can hear them chatter away in those video clips, they are quiet the vast majority of the time.

My experience. I have had a grunt call work 2x in my 28 years however if I take a mature buck I have no need to use the call so I've tried it 6-10 times or so. Sometimes I know the monster is around and I'd rather have him make his own mistake like checking a huge ground scrape. Anyway, my advice in both times it worked is you better be alert and ready. Saw a large buck the thursday before season one year, had no luck with him the first 2 days, he had roughly 30 trees rubbed, not saplings, when I walked in I started to grunt right at shooting light, every 25 steps I let out a soft grunt, it was calm as could be, I finally got to those destroyed trees and then went into a sequence, in less than 5 seconds I had a buck at 20 yards and he had me pegged, he lowered his head to see me under the balsam firs and I put the safety back on, a 6 pointer showed up, not the hog. If it was the hog I wouldn't have gotten him, I should've had the gun shouldered, I almost couldn't believe it happened that quickly, I was just on the ground, had no stand in his bedroom, what happened to the hog ? Told my reli's about him because this was old zone 4, they hunted 2nd weekend, drove that part of the swamp out and 2 standers missed him lol. This was a rare deer of today as he would've dressed out in the mid 200's sporting a mess of a huge rack. So be ready especially if on the ground, it can happen very quickly especially if you're in his bedroom, 2nd time it worked was roughly the same deal, small buck, but it happened very quickly, with the pressure of today I don't grunt except at the last 5 to 10 minutes if I'm certain I know it's a buck and he's headed the wrong way or whatever, but many times they'll stop, but not come in to check my grunts out until past the hour.

Checked my deer hunting log,Messed up my story a bit, I had a multi-zone buck tag and this was 2nd weekend, I hunted him Saturday,Sunday, and then Monday AM was the incident, Tuesday the reli's drove him out, I wasn't present for the drive, had to work Tuesday. I think possibly you need the right buck in the right mood for it to work also. I also think nearest to the really thick cover possibly the better during rifle and better chance if you are in an area that doesn't get much pressure or it doesn't get driven out etc. I tell you what my heart skipped a beat when that 6 pointer came flying in brush busting, I thought it was him dog gone it. But, I should've had gun shouldered, safety off, ready for a neck shot, I was almost in shock I had a buck coming in that soon and that fast.

One reason that it may work for me could be that I like to harvest my does before rut. Used to shoot quite a few actually when I hunted in an intensive harvest area. Bucks knew there used to be does bedded there and came looking, maybe better buck/doe ratio. Last year nothing worked, seemed like deer numbers dropped. Now its one deer and done in my area. Successful calling and successfully putting your tag on a mature one are two different things. Grunting in young bucks are a piece of cake.

I myself have never been succesful calling in a buck. I called in another hunter. He was so excited he crossed the swamp onto my private property to see me. Lucky for him I was not one of the drunk sound shooters. Where it has been good for me is when a group of does come in. A soft grunt while they are leaving makes them stick around the area longer. I figure the longer they are by me the better. I kept a group of does around my stand for almost 45 minutes on a opener morning. I did have my nephew using a lil can call. He seen a deer and it did just like someone earlier mentioned. Started to circle around him. Unfortunatley for my nephew he circled right in front of the scope of my 30.06.

The deal is how many deer would you see if you weren't calling ? That's the question of the day, many times likely the same but who knows. I don't want a bunch of does or yearlings pegging my location so I don't do any calling, don't want a doe to get to the edge, find me and stop as the buck if trailing will stop in the thicker stuff and not give me a shot, chance to get winded, seen, figured out doe gone buck gone, but most of the time the doe will be too worried about an already trailing buck to give the call any response anyway.

That's the way I look at it too. I always wonder if the buck of a lifetime could be right aroung the corner just out of sight and if I start blowing on my grunt call he might just turn around and head the other direction. I would rather just be quite and still and see how it plays out.

I don't do much cold calling with my grunt tube, I will do a few doe bleats throughout the day, I figure it can't hurt. The reason I carry a grunt tube is if I see a buck walking away, I can call to him, it can't get any worse can it? On a side note, when I have heard bucks grunting close to me, and this is just how I perceive their grunt which sounds like a "nniurrrrrpp" to me.

Interesting call story from this weekend. Had a nice forked buck chasing 2 doe around the meadow about 175 yards out (a bit long for my bow). I was trying the mature buck soft grunt to try to get his attention and the does to come closer but none of them had any interest what so ever. Then I changed to the young buck note on my True Talker. With a single grunt, the fork stopped dead in his tracks, his spine stiffened and tail stood in a straight line with his spine and he did his best to spot me. Interesting how the pitch can change the game...they all continued to play and I got the best entertainement show this side of the Discovery Channel.

I grunted in a nice one on Friday, saw a tree getting worked over pretty good in the swamp. Gave him two short grunts and within a minute saw some antlers headed my way. He held up out of range but one more grunt got him to within 15 yards at last light. Pics is in the archery photos thread.

I have had very positive results using an agressive/deep toned grunt with mature deer. The key is having mature deer around and those deer being in the right frame of mind. For example, I have on two occaisions harvested mature bucks that were blind called in to grunt calls. I have also brought in mature bucks that were headed the opposite direction by calling at them. I have also seen agressive calls made by deer themselves draw in other deer - the most amazing sequence being a buck I killed last year that made the aggressive grunt now referred to as the "buck roar" while chasing a doe that he ended up breeding as his last act. These grunts were much louder than I had ever expected them to be and they brought other deer literally running to him.

The point is, any deer vocalization can draw deer in, but the conditions have to be correct. More often than not, you will get not see results from calling. Yet, in my experience, I have rarely found deer to act adversely to calling UNLESS they directly connect the calling to a human presence.
