Which locators play best together?

Recommended Posts

I have an older FL8 and want to get a new locator. I will have the 2 in the same wheelhouse. So I would like to get one that doesn't interfere with the FL8 even though it has the IR button.

I have an older zercom color that doesn't play well with the vex ( nice locator by itself) no IR

My initial thought is that VEX's will play best together. I am open to any brand

I can tell you a marcum will mess up the vex,at least it did for me. last winter my buddy was using his marcum and i a vex and the vex had alot of interferance on it,couldn't clear it up. They were probably 6-8ft apart. Just my two cents but another vex will probably work the best, hopefully you get some more responces.

I get what your after and I do know that if it's just the 2 flasher you'll be ok ,but if there's more around no matter the make a Vex is incapable of knocking out that interference.

You'd be better getting a Marcum.Birds also run on different freq's so they have clear screens with other flashers around...again not so with Vexilar.

Just bought a Vex the other day and was told to stick with same brands IE: Vex and Vex, Marcum and Marcum etc... Everyone I know run Vexilars so that was how I made my descsion...

This is fine as long as you NEVER fish with (or even around) someone who has a Marcum or humminbird...

I just don't know why you wouldn't be safe and go with a Marcum or Humminbird in the first place?! Then you would never have to worry about this issue!

There is nothing I like more than fishing next to a vex guy with my Marcum wink

If I bring my LX5 into a shack where everyone is using Vexilars they wine and cry when I turn it on, it gives all of them tons of interferance, I get none. That being said I have often thought about going Vexilar, but it's way to much fun to mess with my buddies and listen to them wine.

Marcum and Vexilar definately do not play nice with each other.

I have a Marcum and have fished with guys that have a Lowrance and they have played together just fine.

But it seems Vexilar doesnt really like anything...

Hence the LX5 grin

lots of interference rejection capabilities

Why do the Vexilars get so much interference? Just wondering If they really are that bad I might return it and get a marcum. The thing I dont like about the marcum is the arm that supports the tranducer, it seems flimsy/cheap, I worry about breaking it...

As others have stated, your Vex will not be able to handle fishing close to a Marc, and it's likely to have some issues with the HB as well unless you change the frequency on the HB.

I HATE making a recommendation based solely on what won't screw up the display on your old Vex flashr, but if that's your criteria then your best bet is another Vex, or possibly a HB.

Hope that helps, and good luck.

Yes, Vexs are terrible at tuning out interference from other flashers. If you try to use it around other flashrs, especially 2 or more other flashrs, you're likely to have some real frustration.

When I got my first Marc after using a Vex for years and years, I didn't think I'd like the arm. Turns out I love the arm, far more than I like fishing with the float in the hole. I've never heard of one breaking.

Or buy the Marcum, remove the arm, go buy a $6 foam vex transducer float, and you are good to go!

I've had Marcum for a few years and never have had an arm issue. It's actually a great option to have a moveable arm.Back when I ran Vex's I threw away the float...I hated plugging up my hole with it.

Everyone you know runs a vex, why would you get a marcum? Crappiekieth how close do you have to be for interference to be a problem? Fly2day I personelly cant say ones better than the other, but it seems u may need to read through this full thread as to what the original poster was asking.

I run a LX3 and have trouble around FL18s and LX5s, with the LX5 being the worst. I have fished next to a Humminbird ICE55 and had zero interference. The wife uses as FL8 and we can come to a happy place but neither one is totally clear. The Vex and Marcum work on a 200Khz frequency and the Humminbirds are up in the 400s so the chances of interference are slim. One thing that will help you out is if you have a dual beam sonar, put it on the narrow beam so your cones aren't so big.

We've been able to get up to 4 flashers working in the same house. This includes a combination of LX5s, VX1s, FL18s, FL8s, and FL20s. The LX5 can tune out almost any interference, but definitely gives the rest the most troubles. It just takes a little time for everyone to work through the interference, but it can be done.

Interference advice. Make sure when you are trying to clear them up you do them one at a time. Once you have one that is pretty good go to the next one and repeat.

If that doesn't work, whichever unit still isn't playing nice just put in a time out.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
