Remington Model 700 news story

Did anyone happen to catch the national news on NBC? They just did a story on the Remington Model 700 and the problems that some are having with it. Seems that they have found out that it will sometimes fire without even pulling the trigger! Had video of people taking the safety off, and as soon as it went to the fire position, the gun went off. Kinda scary. Think they are replaying it on CNBC tonight. Just a heads up!

I watched it....i agree some of those videos are scary, But sad as it it, why would any parent allow their 9 year old to carry a Remington 700 in Montana alone and then try to blame the gun and the company for his death upon unloading. I feel for that family, but who is responsible. Also those guns that were misfiring were both swat and military unit rifles. I would bet those of the swat officers have been "adjusted" to their specs and the military rifles take thousands of rounds through them without much maintence besides regular cleaning.

more anti gun spin by a big media outlet. If this was a prevalent as they are making it why don't we hear about this everyday? If I was to bet I would say the guns that are doing this have been tinkered with by someone who doesn't have the knowledge of safe trigger vs light trigger. This just makes me mad, an hour against firearm use and ownership, a few seconds of some salesman on hidden camera defending them. Media bias? Not here.

Wasn't NBC who claimed the chevy trucks fuel tanks would blow up upon any side impact?? Then later to find out that they staged the whole thing...

I am also sure the triggers have been messed with on the test subjects in the video.

I own 3 700's and will stand by them no matter what.

I never saw the TV episode, but just read about it online. The 9 year old never shot himself, it was the mother unloading the gun that shot her child. (God help her). I don't know if she is one that is a great person to interview. She swears that she never had her finger on the trigger at all, I swear that I would say the same thing. Even be adimant about it enough to get myself to believe it if were not true. A better spokesperson would be the numerous people that had it discharge without hurting someone. If it were truly a problem, wouldn't there be a lot more of those kinds of stories?

If what everyone was taught in gun safety were applied in this situation,and every situation, their wouldnt be a problem. Treat all weapons as if they are loaded and pointed in a safe direction. Do not take your gun off safe until you are sure of your target and ready to fire. When you are coming in from hunting at the end of the day and unloading your weapons, watch members of your party are they safe? If not teach them, it may save a life.

Trigger:

The woman who shot her child is what got the whole thing started. When they ran the story on the news, they had videos that were shot by Border Patrol agents and Police SWAT snipers that showed the problem. Pretty interesting. They also had some documents from Remington that showed the company was debating doing a recall on the weapons, but decided against it, since it was a very limited number of weapons having the problem. I guess from what they said on the news, the government has not control over firearms and can't force a recall. It is the companines decision and the companies decision only.

in this day and age the info would be everywhere, just google it and the only thing that shows up about any Remington 700 firing when the safety is switched off is this CNBC show. I have never had a customer or heard of anyone having this problem.

I missed it but I see its on again tonight. I have a 700 in 270 and never had a problem. Did they have any real explaination for what is causing this or was it just an anti gun sob story???

I watched it...

The only time I've heard of this happening is when a person tries to mess with the heavy trigger. That is, a person tries to modify it to relieve the lbs. needed for a crisp trigger pull. Rem triggers are notoriously on the heavy side.

I just watched the video (thanks for providing the link Musky), and the thing that bothers me the most is that people don't use common sense with their firearms.

Sure there might be an issue with a very small number of 700's, but who would ever have a rifle pointed anywhere near another person when their unloading it, or at any time for that matter? TREAT EVERY GUN AS IF IT WERE LOADED is the one thing everybody takes away from gun safety.

I've had a number of 700's personally, and when I was in the Marines all of the sniper rifles were 700's. Not a one has ever had any problem with the safety or trigger.

That being said, it's a shame that that young boy died so early on in life and I feel for his family.

Sounds like the plaintiffs lawyers and their experts are on a fishing expedition. Their expert witnesses are a joke. It's funny listening to them. Actually it's more pathetic than funny. The word "spin" comes to mind instantly when you listen to them.

The two rumored recalls weren't even close to happening. Actually one of the recalls that was brought up wasn't even about the trigger issue.

I get what you are saying Musky. I just read the article, never saw the report. I'm sure I can about imagine what the report has said. I just don't know how credible the lady is. Non of us really do know.

Hmmm border patrol agents and Swat team, you don't think some of them might have had some kind of trigger work done. I would think if this was a problem, the millions of guns sold to the average hunter would also have problems. Maybe those numbers have yet to be seen. I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I don't believe everything I see on TV. There is too much sensationalism to try and Make a story.

Great advice. I don't think I will ever trust a saftey on any gun brand after learning of Remington 700 problems. This will just make me more careful in the future.

You hit the nail on the head! I can tell you that from personal experience, even the best of people have this happen. Case in point, in Iraq we had to clear our weapons before entering any building, coming back on post after convoy escort missions, etc. You wouldn't believe how many soldiers said their weapon was clear, stuck their muzzle into the clearing barrel and discharged a round. It can happen to anyone.

I agree with muzzle control, as this is how many accidents happen. Let's all practice and teach this to all our hunting buddies. The season is coming for alot of us to get together and safety is NO.1 !!!!!! A lack of safety can ruin a lifetime.

Right on. I had my son watch the NBC clip just to re-enforce the concept that NO GUN should ever be presumed safe. I won't blame the media for this one, because it's been known for many years that some of the Remington model 700s do have this unplanned firing problem. No doubt, it's a RARE occurrance, and I have never had any problem with my Model 700, but ANY mass produced item can have problems.
