Bringing the Wife Deer Hunting

My bride is thinking she wants to go deer hunting the second week with me, she is not going to carry a gun (she might sit in the stand but more then likely not), so do I need to buy her a license if so she is 28 does she need to have a fire arm safety certificate to do so.

I buy a license for my wife when she sits with me. Well I buy a license for her before season planning that she will sit with me.

I also buy the wife a license because she does sit by me or by her self, she enjoys rifle and muzzy hunting very much. It's a site to see when a buck walks out and i tell her to take him and her reply you shoot, so we go back and forth untill she pulls up and downs him. We have been doing it for 5 years now and i enjoy the excitment that she has, i'm telling her this year that when you see one pull up and shoot no more bickering the one that see it first gets to shoot. i'll also tell her to get on him incase i miss and i'll ask are you on him she will say yes and my reply will say take him i got a branch in the way. i guess not too many guys have this problem i wouldn't miss it for the world. i cant get her to go duck hunting thou but at least i have her out there with me deer hunting.

So, then if the wife sees a deer and does not have a license can she then tell her husband who has not seen the deer? Wouldn't the be assisting or spotting like it says in the regs. if she seen it and told her husband that there is a deer there?

I wouldn't want to have to argue that in court. Yeah judge, she was sitting there and she absolutely did not nudge me, flash her eyes at the deer, point, get excited when it approached, or anything else that helped me get him. So you jump a deer as the two of you are walking in to the deer stand. That is a form of driving deer and unless she's invisible and not walking too, then she is helping you drive that deer.

Think I will just spend the $30, the thing I was worried about the Firearm Safety Certificate which you can buy a one year pass on that to get a license.

When you are sitting at home the night before the hunt and your friend who is not hunting this year, tells you a great spot to hunt you better not listen! He just assisted you!

She does not need a license. It's a great way to get women involved with the outdoors. My wife will be in the double tree stand this year that she bought for me a few years ago so she could go with. Good luck hunting!

Some of you guys are being a little bit paranoid or have some extremeley anal CO's in the area. I dont' think a warden would even try to give someone a ticket for that unless the person was dumb enough to say she spotted/drove/alerted/participated in the taking of the game. There is nothing wrong with taking a friend, spouse, kid hunting and just have them sit with you. Last time I checked, it was encouraged.

EXACTLY what I was thinking! Just take your wife with and don't worry about it. Unless you did something else to [PoorWordUsage] off the C.O., there is no way they would give you a ticket for introducing your wife to deer hunting like that. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that they pat you on the back for your efforts, and most likely might just be a little jealous that you got her to go along with you.

Seriously, There is a difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. The letter of the law says the speed limit is 55 miles per hour. 56 Miles per hour means you get a ticket. The spirit of the law gives some leeway. No C.O. would write you or your wife a ticket because your unlicensed wife is sitting next to you in your stand. No judge would convict you either.

Who said anyone was worried? Your the one that will get stuck with the fine or court cost and hassle for your defense if you get caught and we happen to be right. I wish you the best.

I believe that may be incorrect. I asked the CO about 5 years ago if mt wife could walk along with me and the dog in the fall pheasant hunting.

The CO explained to me that if she was walking along that she would need a license as she was assiting in the hunt. He also said that if I was stopped by a CO, he could guarantee that she would be fined.

I would check with the DNR or the local CO before I took her along.

With the state as short as it is with money, if I were you, I would plan on paying a fine for hunting without a license.

I would guess that is not a cheap fine compared to a license.

That's your choice which you would like to pay.

I know for $30 or what the cost of a lic. is I would just buy it and then really not have to worry about it cause then I know I was abiding the law and I won't have to get dragged into court to fight a ticket that some officer gave me as he/she decided to follow the law to a T. Anyways I feel buying the lic. shouldn't break you and the money goes to the resource that you use anyways so it is a win win all around choice!!

Oh yes they would write you a ticket as I have been told they would.

The judge would not feel sorry for you for breaking the law either even if you believe its petty.

There is always a one in a million chance that a CO might let you go but is the gamble woth it?

I called the D.N.R. head office in St Paul. You do not need a license in this situation. Only if you are driving deer etc.

Harvey, You better check your source. The man I talked to said absolutely not. I gave the scenario of your wife pointing out a deer to you and he laughed. I never said I thought the law was petty, only that you guys were wrong.
