Skunk Smell

MNUser

Question

A skunk and I got a little close this weekend. I got the smell out of the clothes but my boots are another story. I just got a pair of Rocky boots about 3 weeks ago and now you can't even get close to them. How can I get the smell out of the leather? I soaked them in tomato juice but that was worthless. Any ideas.....

Try white vinegar. It is also reported that a mixture of

* 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide

* ¼ cup of baking soda

* 1 teaspoon of dish soap

mixed and applied immediately will work. Pet stores also sell a couple of products for removing skunk odor.

Lots of hits on search engine.

Seen a show on mythbusters on what works best to get rid of the smell, they had a spray that was made to take away the skunk smell that worked as good as the old fashioned remedies. They didnt name the product, maybe check their HSOforum.

skunk off or natures miracle.....can be found at pet stores......dont now for sure, but looked at the ingredients and they appear to be the same....one is a lot less expensive...same company.....had a pointer that would tangle with them at least once if not twice a year(great dog but lacking memory recall) and it worked pretty well.

My vet sold me a product that my neighbors recommended when we moved up north here called Skunk Out. It's a shampoo to use on the dog.

Also another thing to try possibly is douche. When we moved into our rental the landlord had about 8 bottles of it under the kitchen sink. I never asked about it but on the subject of skunks once and dogs when he was up visiting it was finally revealed why he had 8 bottles under the kitchen sink. His dog got sprayed once and it was late at night with pet stores and everything closed. He had heard bout douche working but need a bit more than a bottle so he went and bought a case of it at a store. He has a long haired dog so it's a pain to get the smell out he said, but he did say although it wasn't as good as the skunk out shampoo and didn't work 100% it did take most the smell out of the dog.

I wouldn't tell your buddies at all if you do in fact douche your boots wink

our dog killed a skunk last week up at the RV

and we didnt relize it right away..stunk up everything

Debbie slept in the truck.lol

I guess i got use to it

it was a big deal the next morning

some people had just bought the trailer lot down from us

thats where the killing went down..lol

debbie the nieghbor and i walked over to look at the skunk

it was a a pretty big one...just as we were walking away the new

people drove in...looked like we had just give them a welcoming present

was funny as hec pretty soon it was a gathering of all the nieghbors

pretty good humour !!!!

but back to business everyone had an idea how to get the stink out of

the dog

we ended up just using baby shampoo

it didnt get it out completely but it did a fairly good job

as the days went on it got better

not sure how it would work on boots

When I was a little nipper, the neighbor and myself cornered a family of skunks in a culvert. Our plan was to capture the babies and sell them as pets. Using a garden hose to drive the varmints, and a rabbit cage, we were able to get all of the skunks out one-by-one and installed in rabbit hutches.

Of course, the stench was pretty awful, but we were getting rich.....

Upon arrival home, Mom ordered me to the outhouse to change, and I spent the next couple of hours in the lake with bottles of shampoo, bars of soap (including Lava - ugggghhhh!) and finally was allowed to dry off.

The clothing and shoes were a different story, and when Grandpa showed up later that night, he instructed me to bury clothing and shoes in a sand pile, and mark the spot.

One week later, I dug out the clothing, and the smell was gone. I don't know how or why, but it worked.

My shorthair took her second hit in the last two weeks. I tried everything and this mixture seemed to work the best. The first time was tough because she got sprayed directly in the mouth. I had to be extremely careful around her face and eyes because the peroxide can blind a dog. The odor was completely gone until she opened her mouth. I gave her a little tomato juice to drink everyday and it seemed to cut it down. She was finally odor free this weekend only to get sprayed again yesterday afternoon!

I was doing some research because most of the smell now is on her shock collar and found to use activated charcoal pellets and place it in a bag for a couple days. The charcoal will absorb the odor out of the plastic and I would imagine it would do the same for your boots.

Put your soiled whatever's,(boots, clothes, etc)in a large plastic bag with coffee grounds for about 24 hours.Dry not brewed. If you want to pull a prank on your buddies brew the coffee after and hand them a "fresh" cup a Joe!This will work wonders!!!!!!!c63
