Fall fun

so its been a success the last few years.. You really dont win anything.. its just about having fun. Do we want to do the secret word again? Its about the time of year we start it.

I have been really busy this summer. Been helping Mr.Twister design a few lures that may or may not see the light next season. If they do, count on me going postal... the craw I think will be a hit, the paddle tail will be hit or miss, a hit for me for sure.. I have also been working on a scum frog type deal that has stumped me something ugly.. I am not smart enough to work with different plastics. Getting really frustrated at this point. I have a great idea, but, I am not smart enough to make it happen at this point.. Been working about a year on this project. Sucks! Please wish me luck on this one!

Deitz,

LOVE the "Scum Frog" type lures! Fish a bunch of farm ponds in this neck of the woods (Omaha, NE and western Iowa). Most are mossed-over by early July and "froggin'" is about the only way to go after 'em.

Don't know what difficulties you're having, but my suggestion(s) are to make sure they float (don't keep filling up with water), and the body is soft enough to collapse EASILY to expose the hooks!

Good luck with your (ad)venture!

just got back from a morning on chisago. Caught 10 fish. 7 of which were bass. other 3 were pike. Nothing worth taking pictures of. 4 were 1 and half to 2 pounds. other 3 were little guys. all 3 pike were little guys as well. had all my luck shallow in water so soupy your line left a trail in it. tried deep stuff for about an hour with nothing.

Man, I had a tough time this weekend. I fished a 500 acre west metro lake Both Sat afternoon to early eve then again at sun up till 11am on Sunday. I caught one fish.... yep. one. a 16.5 incher on a spinner bait. I tried deep (14-15fow) rocks on a nice mid lake hump that is surrounded by 20 or so fow, with cranks, carolina rigs, jigs, t-rigged 10 inch worms to no avail. Tried real shallow as lake levels seemed to be up a bit and seemed greener than I thought it should be. ( prob cuz of rain from a couple days before ). Still very little action. Suprizingly so. Caught my one fish about mid morning in about 2 feet of water on white spinnerbait. Water temp was 64 degrees. I had much higher expectations. Now I have a bad taste in my mouth and want to get out there again to rectify the situation. Not sure if I should give up on my deepwater rocks on that lake or if I should cut my losses and just hit another lake. Frustrating!

ya, the fish seem to really be in transition right now. thursday evening on chisago the bass were really going just not that many nice fish remained out deep, most were small but we did manage about 5 over 3lbs. i went out again on saturday to chisago and the fish were not going at all out on the deep and the same shallow weed spots. i did find one summer school of bass out deep that saved the day for me, but it seemed like the last ones willing to bite. i got fired up and tried a few more summer deep spots to find only 1 other fish. water temp 61-62. same thing for a lake in wisc on friday. lots of 1-1.5lbs fish with a 5.2lber and 3.5lber out on the weedlines. it just seems like it is just a confusing or frustrating time to fish right now.

Saturday I caught 9. Caught a few shallow and a few deep. I caught 4 in 4 casts on deep rocks, thought I was onto something, turns out I wasn't. Not another bite out there. Biggest was 20 1/2". Sunday caught 17, shallow pads and deeper weedline. No size.

was up in the mille lacs area. fished friday through sunday morning. wind kept us off the water most of the day friday and all of saturday. hit up a couple small lakes in the area and caught quite a few fish on the smaller lakes but nothing special. all fish were in thick coon tail in about 4-7ft of water on jigs and tubes. got out on mille lacs sunday morning for a few hours and caught 4 smallies..biggest was 18inch. also caught a 19.5in largemouth that went 4.75lbs. i dont think the smallies have moved up shallow yet. caught a couple in about 8ft water on a red eye shad. largemouth was caught in thick weeds on a spinnerbat in about 3 ft of water.

thatoneguy,

It's a simple big bass for a weekend contest. No prizes except for bragging rights. Based on reports I've seen for the past few weekends (and my own experiences) anyone who ties into a good fish has a pretty good shot at winning. I think I'm better off entering the accidental pike category than the bass category as of late (got a 32"+ 3 consecutive weekends)...

Made it out this past thurs fishing for largies and did really well from 6-8 pm. Ended up with 15 largemouth, two northerns, and one walleye. Biggest bass went 19.5" with the rest in the 17-18.5 inch range. All were caught on a steep dropping point with cabbage on it. Got a couple on vertical baits but the best bite was on spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Went out on sunday this weekend after the smallies and did very well. Found them tightly schooled in one area and picked up around forty or so between 16 and 18 inches. All of them were caught on slower drop/drag baits. Also fished a couple lakes for largies on sunday evening and it was tough to say the least. Ended up with four in two hours with the biggest going 17 inches. The best largemouth bite i've had this fall has definitely been on dirty (2' or less visib) lakes. Either the clear lakes i've fished haven't turned on quite yet or im doing something wrong on them.

Sounds like I wasn't the only one having a tough time on Sunday. My dad came up all the way from Arkansas, only to get skunked! Well, I should have had two bass in the boat that broke free and we each missed a northern. Dad had a muskie follow which was pretty cool for him. I had pre-fished a bit on Wednesday and things looked good. The front must have killed us.

Is deep/shallow better after a cold front like that, or are things just slow?

Thanks!

as we have said before on these boards, there is no real rule, just some times rules of thumb or so.. For the most part, yes deeper fish can be easier to catch, but season can also trump that. I for sure tried deep to no or very little success... River fish can also be less affected by cold fronts. But not always.
