When the topic of players holding out for not enough money being offered to them comes up, it really REALLY [PoorWordUsage] me off!! The guy turns down a ten year 120 million dollar offer because he feels he is worth 160 million! WOW.....in these times that most of us in the U.S. are going through it takes alot of balls for these sports athletes to turn down millions and millions of dollars because they feel they deserve more! Heck, I feel like I am a hard worker and good employee so maybe i should hold out and request a couple million dollar raise.....HAHA, i wish!! It just really gets to me when there are people in this country that are really struggling and living day to day and paycheck to paycheck and these selfish people are crying because they need 10 or 20 million dollars added onto their salary cause they feel they deserve it and need a bigger house because the 8 bedroom home they have now is not big enough or the 200,000 dollar car is not nice enough!! GRRRRRR......i just had to get that out and see what everyone else feels?? Priorities in this country are really headed in the wrong direction and it is going to be scary to see what the future holds 10-20 years from now!!

He's the best in the world at what he does...how much do you suppose the best surgeon, real-estate developer or investor makes? It's an open, free market...let the man make whatever the market will give him!!

While we're at it let's not forget to rave on about the Fat Cat Billionaire owners who have that kind of money to throw around smile

It's a free market and in the end it's all of us fans who line the owners and players pockets.

A lot of which gets lost in discussions like this is that Revis has a legally binding contract that he signed that pays him what his agent and himself agreed to with the Jets that doesn't mean squat because Revis had 1 good year and now he feels he is entitled to more money. I do agree that, because of the short lifespan that an athlete has, he should make a good deal of money. Maybe he should have negotiated a better or shorter contract initially so that he then had better latitude to negotiate a more lucrative contract later. To say that these athletes should consider the state of the economy and everybody elses financial situation is ridiculous as they care only about themselves and not even the financial situation they put their team in. But the fact does remain he is under contract for this year and a few more so let him sit.

I agree with several of the points:

- He signed a contract (although management and players routinely break them in the NFL, so they mean less)

- It's a free market, see what the market will pay

- He's a whiny baby

Ignore the fact that this guy plays for the Packers, but think about how similar his situation is to Revis'. Both were younger players that had breakout seasons in 2009. Look at the stark contrast in how they approach things:

Quote:
Tight end Jermichael Finley has two years left on a contract paying him the minimum base salary of $470,000 this year. He took note of the five-year, $36.175 million deal signed by San Diego's Antonio Gates last month.

"The (Gates) contract thing is great," Finley said. "But I'd rather be the best tight end ever to play the game than have the most money. The money will come with it."

Finley's agent, Blake Baratz, doesn't know what the timing will be but is confident a blockbuster offer from Green Bay will come.

"Just because you're talented doesn't mean you get paid in the National Football League," said Baratz. "Greg Jennings did it consistently. Antonio Gates has been to six straight Pro Bowls. Peyton Manning is an MVP.

So many of us are destroying our bodies playing weekend warrior sports, and most of us will never even crack the $100k ceiling. I don't buy the "they deserve it because of the physical stress" argument. The rest of us do it for the love of the sports that we play. Most of these guys do it STRICTLY for the money and that's why I feel justified to skewer their claims for more money.

I don't disagree with that statement, but, 160 million dollars is MORE than enough money! Do these athletes really need to live the lifestyle they do?? It would be different if they were using it wisely but they waste it!! No reason that a maximum salary in the leagues couldn't be 500,000 a year or even less! Maybe these players would learn some money management that way! And as stated by an earlier post, alot of these guys get done in the league and become bankrupt!

the sticker on the deal is guarenteed money and supposedly the Jets aren't offering enough and really that is all a football player has is guarenteed money as they could get dropped next year and not make anything really from the big contract..

Who are any of us to tell anyone else how much money is enough?

I don't make a lot of money but I am sure I could live just fine on 5-10,000 less than I make but I would certainly take a raise of 5-10,000 if it were offered to me, wouldn't you?

Of course i would, the point is that they don't NEED the money! Pretty sure they would get by just find making 200,000 a year instead of 10 million a year!! If they make that much and NEED that much to survive, they have too much in luxuries that are not NEEDED!

The point is..........the same arguement could be made against you and whatever wage you happen to make. However much money you make, you can be sure that there is someone out there making LESS and getting by just fine. They would state that you don't NEED that much money to survive. Perhaps you have too many luxuries.

Don't mean to get snotty here but what one person thinks another person needs or doesn't needs is irrelevant.

I could just as easily say that you don't need that 4 wheeler that is in your avatar. I don't have one I don't know why you need to have on either.

Remember , We live in a free country. We all would like to get paid as much as someone is willing to pay us.

HAHA....they don't need the money......how do you know what he needs??? I don't blame him one bit for trying to get what he should be paid for......the system for football contracts is rediculous right now when the #1 overall draft pick gets 50 million guarenteed when there are players out there that have proven themselves in the NFL and still make very little compared to others in the league. Such a Revis is arguably the best CB in football yet he isn't even the highest paid CB on his team!!!

True, the same arguement could be made i guess.........but comparing my wage to a 10 million dollar per year salary is completly different!!! I get what you are trying to say, but lets be realistic here!

So what you are saying is that these athletes NEED 5 million dollar homes with million dollar boats and a million dollars or more worth of cars just to survive??? I don't think so!! Sounds pretty out there to me!! I consider myself pretty fortunate to have the things i have (and still owe on wink but by no means have i over done it!

they don't need the things they have and most are broke 5-10 years removed from theeir sport anyways but they are all 1 play away from ending their careers and they have to get what they can while they can still play the game!!

I have to agree with most of the people here. While I may feel he doesn't need the money, it's not up to us to decide what Revis needs.

No matter how broke or well off any of us are, there is someone lower on the economic rung who can say the exact same thing about us. Most of us unfortunately don't have a skill that's highly in demand with very low supply.

There may come a point where pro sports prices themselves out of favor with fans, but I'm not holding my breath.

I guess what i was trying to get across is how extreme their salary is when our country right now is in hard times! Although i do think it is pretty neat when some of these guys are giving extreme amounts to charities and other things for good causes instead of blowing it all! It would be fun to get a stat as to the percentage of athletes that give big amounts of cash to charities!!

More power to him i guess for getting what he can but it has gone a little overboard these last few years as to what athletes and entertainers in general are making!

I think it was Chris Rock that explained the difference between Rich and Wealthy in his stand-up routine.

Shaq is rich.

The guy that writes Shaq a check is wealthy.

Yeah, athletes make too much money. But there are people making even more money off of them.

you guys are forgetting there is an agent involved. they do all the negotiations on the players best interest, as they see it, compared to other players saleries. the player isn't involved untill negotiations fall apart or stop altogether. the agent gets about 15% of the contract so it may be their (agent) greed.

There is also a player's union which I'm sure won't rest as long as there is a player not making what he is worth. I am sure there is pressure from the union on these players to demand the largest slary they can get.

No I am not saying that anyone NEEDS millions to survive but if you can get it, why not?

I don't know you or know what kind of possesions you own but I'm sure that I could find someone who would argue that you HAVE overdone it with your posessions. I used to work with a guy that used to complain all the time about my 4x4 truck, fish house, 4 wheeler and 5th wheel RV that I own. I made less money than him, I just spent mine differently.

I understand Revis' wanting more $$$ as he thinks he is worth it, but he IS UNDER CONTRACT. Yeah, NFL contracts aren't fully guaranteed like baseball or basketball, but at the same token, say a guy is playing at pro bowl level(Bryant McKinnie) so he gets a big deal, then the following year he is playing OK, but not near what he is worth, however you can't justify cutting him..... What would happen if the team asked that player to take a pay cut?????? I'm sure that would go over well....
