rubber duck
What kind of critters does anybody use for bait other than minnows, leechs, and crawlers? How do you catch them, how do you fish them? Frogs? Salamanders? Mice?
Guest
My old friend's Grandpa used to take a live Squirrel and a Cane Pole with heavy Dacron Line, tie some big Treble Hooks onto a Wire Leader, tie the squirrel onto the leader, then he'd drag the squirrel behind the boat until a Muskie grabbed the squirrel--he'd set the hook good and firm into the fish and then toss the whole rig into the water (kinda like the barrel technique from Jaws)and let the Muskie swim around for an hour dragging the Cane Pole til it was tired and then he'd haul in the fish What do the Regs. say about this technique? LOL!! ------------------Chells
Aquaman01
LOL! Ahhh ha ha! The mental picture is great! I've used the big white grubs ya find in the yard, crawfish (regs apply), hellgramites (I think that's what they were) and once I used a cigarette butt soaked in cod liver oil to catch a couple of bullhead after I ran outta bait.------------------Aquaman<')}}}}}><{Peace and Fishes
deadeye
I heard some old guys talking about a new twist to the old minnow. They said they had put Preperation H on the minnow and the fish really liked it. I don't want to know how or why the minnow got that stuff on it but I thought it was pretty funny that they were talking about really using it.><>deadeye
Valv
Deadeye, don't you wish to know how some people come up with these ideas ?Or maybe in this case....not !!! I don't know, I might give it a try.I'd like to see face of clerk when I check out at grocery store with tubes of PreparationH, Petroleum Jelly, KY Jelly, and some large carrots for my horses
rubber duck
Chells That must have been fun tying the live squrill to the leader, great idea though. I wonder what peta would say(not that i care what they think)?
Walleye_GFA
When I was a kid in New York, I was told that the sparrows some neighbors trapped on a regular basis were used for northern and musky fishing. They said they clipped the wings, and used a special hook that looked like a V that went from the feet to the breasts.Wally
Blackstarluver
When I was a kid my neighbor and I would paddle their canoe around to local rafts and fish for pans, when we ran out of worms we would go to shore, grab some mussels shuck them with our pocket knives and use the meat for bait. Or we would use those mini leaches under the rocks. Ok heres the rub; Preperation H, read the ingredients, it contains shark oil. Perhaps thats why it works so well. I also have a question. Does it make you a better fisherfolk(Aquamans line) if you are the first in line for your daily tablespoon of cod liver oil? Just curious.Good luck!JC[This message has been edited by Blackstarluver (edited 05-08-2003).]
hydro
An old guy from Iowa who used to come up to our resort told me a story of the good old days fishing for bullheads. He would fish with a chunk of steak tied to the line (no hook) under a bobber. When the bullhead popped the bobber down, Carl would flip the fish into the boat, wait a minute until the fish let go of the steak and then flip the rig back into the water and repeat the process. Once the bottom of the boat was covered with horned pout he would head back to shore for a nightcap. Now, while this may well have been another fish story, this guy could catch his share. I know, because I was the kid who cleaned up the fish cleaning house at the end of the day.

deadeye
Valv,That is exactly what I said. I really don't want to know how they figured that out. I also heard that it had some kind of shark oil in it so it made since. It is just how they found out it worked that might be really interesting! ><>deadeye
Aquaman01
Preparation H - I've heard of folks using WD40 (not okay with me - too many toxins) 'cause of the fish oil, and I can see where a guy may have sprayed a little on a sticky spinner or swivel to make that discovery - but why was there Preparation H in the boat? Oh sure, my fertile imagination can concoct a likely scenario - but do I really WANT to?------------------Aquaman<')}}}}}><{Peace and Fishes
Ole1855
Here's one for you, I won't use any names so nobody will get embarressed.About 25 years ago I was at a friends house on Sun. morning having breakfast before we went fishing. A guy that shall remain nameless, who was dating my friends widowed mom was there also. On Sun. mornings there is a local shopper called the Manney Shopper that gets delivered, in it were all sorts of store ads and free want ads. The guy that was dating my friends mom told my friend to "dial this phone number and hand me the phone", this is the end of the conversation that we heard. "Hi, I see you have an ad in the Manney today for free kittens",..... "How many do you have?",..... "Are they long haired or short haired?"..... "Because I'm going to use them for Musky bait and the long haired ones drown too quick".... Now we could hear both ends of the conversation because the lady on the other end was yelling alot of explitives and doing it quite loudly. My friend and I laughed like crazy, but the guy was seriuos, he really planned to use them for Musky bait. The End.Ole [This message has been edited by Ole1855 (edited 05-08-2003).]

ghotierman
Preparation H discovered during ice fishing make total sense! What do you get from sitting on the ice all day? Polar Bear
My grandpa used to pay me a quarter for every striped gopher I could snare alive. He'd take 'em to Leech and catch muskies. He never got anything over 16-17 pounds but he usually got something. He just used and rubber band to hold a big treble hook to their bellies and let them swim till they either caught a fish or drowned!

Surface Tension
I have a hard time with the thought of using any mammal for bait let alone a kitten, and I dont like cats.

uffdapete
fishing frenzy - I tried using crawfish for bait but have better success using the artificial craws made by Rebel. I've had the best success casting them around small islands on Rainy Lake in mid-June. Have also caught pike and crappies in the same areas and they are dynamite for smallmouth all summer.
