Fireline to mono knot problem

Dan L

Recommended Posts

I like to fish fireline crystal with a mono leader when fishing a wacky worm. I use a uni knot to attach the mono to the fireline, but this weekend I lost two nice fish when I set the hook. I have never had this problem before. It almost looked like fireline cut the mono. I like the visibility of the crystal line but feel I need the mono leader. Any suggestions for a better set up?

Did you lose the knot at the uni-uni knot? I've had that happen too. The knot may slip, and if the ends are cut too short, will fail. Make sure the knot is tight when you tie, and doesnt hurt to retie occassionally, esp if you are catching lots of fish. Sucks to lose rapalas that way!

Fireline cuts. Enough said.

Line to leader knots work on power pro and spider wire. I don't use line to leader knots when attaching leader to Fireline, because whenever I tightened up the knot, 50lb fireline cut right through 25lb fluoro.

You're going to have to use a barrel swivel or other middleman in between line and leader.

On my spinning rods i use 10 lb power pro with 12 lb Seaguar fluoro. I use opposing uni-knots 5 - 6 twists, I call it a jam knot because they jam together. Make sure you wet both lines when you draw the knots tight. I have been using this combination for at least 10 years (cant remember but it has been forever) I have NEVER had a knot failure at the union. I have a minimum of 6 rods rigged this way at all times. St Croix Legend Elites 6'6", 6'8" and 7' all medium or MXF actions.

Try it you will never switch back.

One thing that the combination dies for you is it allows you to shock the line with a quick snap. This really helps be get out of snags that I could never get out of with mono.

I use 20lbs Fireline crystal with either 6 or 10lb Trilene mono leader (depending on the fish) connected with uni to uni and haven't had a problem on my baitcasting rigs.

I use 6 lbs fireline on my spinning setup with 6 lb Trilene mono with the same connecting knot.

Maybe you have a bad batch of mono or are using old line?

i've experienced that same thing with fireline

switched to power pro (same uni to uni knot) and what do you know, the problem went away

uni to uni knot is definitely the right knot though!

edit - also remember with braid you don't need to slam the hook home like with mono. if you are killin it on the hookset that could also factor into your problem

come to think of it, might as well just tie direct - i dont think it makes any difference, i catch plenty of bass in lakes with very clear water - and i tie direct to power pro

Hiya -

I've had the same trouble from time to time with thinner leaders.

Try doubling the Fireline with a Bimini twist or a spider hitch before you tie it to the mono. I prefer a Bimini. A little weird to tie, but 20 minutes in front of the TV with a spool of line to practice with and you'll have it down pat.

Doubling Fireline really reduces breaks at the knot for some reason.

Cheers,

I like gobluem's solution.

Tie direct.

They're bass, not walleye. They aren't particularly known for being line shy.

The ONLY reason I don't tie direct is because more often than not I'm going to be fishing where I KNOW there are big pike, and if one eats my bass lure then I'll want at least some bite protection on there (20-25lb fluoro works wonders).

Uni to uni the same as the fireline package tells you works great. I use that knot for my lake trout fishing winter and summer. If the knot is failing look no further than the guy tying it. I use 10 lb fireline to 10lb seaguar and have never ever had one fail. Many lake trout this winter in the 15lb range and never one failure. The trout will stress that knot a whole lot more than those bass. I do five or more wraps with the mono and seven or more with the fireline. Leave your tags a little longer and with the floro make sure it is extremely wet before pulling taught. good luck
