jkeehl, I have heard the same thing from a fishery biologist about females holding eggs or not laying all of them and then absorbing them...

I had an average opener I would say... ended up at about 20 fish a day, but I couldnt buy a big one. My biggest was a 19" largie. Then I went after some smallies and got a few, but the boat traffic was getting tough. Nice weather though!

Deitz fished a tournament on a nothern minn. lake a few years back that we had problems with the holding tanks and all my fish ended up dying. so insted of throwing them away i took them home and cleaned them it was end of june and when i cleaned them they ALL still had eggs in them. I asked a buddy of mine who if a fish bioligest for the state of mich. and he told me sometimes if the males come up early and the females dont show up the will make the beds and if nothing shows up they will leave after awhile. Then the females will be ready and there will be little if any male waiting for them. They end up absorbing the eggs which can take up to a month. I have seen this a couple times since. He said it hapens a lot with lakes that have deep water structure because the shallow fish are ready because the water warms fast and the deepo fish didnt get triggerd to come up and spawn. maybe that is what happend.

A buddy of mine and his group kept nine northerns the week after the opener and they still all had eggs in them too...everything must be a little screwy this spring.

Thanks for that!, That would explain a lot on the lake I fished. And to be honest, I have heard of the females just absorbing them. Which I feared for this lake. Yet, to be real honest, its not a fear but maybe a blessing.. The lake has too many young bass in it already.

Thanks again for the information..

IKE--ouch.. that sucks!

My little boy Hunter got his first, and it was the biggest bass of the day.

Draggin a wacky stupid rigged comida in 10 feet of water on the outside weed edge. I was sittin there with him on my knee, and he was just slowly reelin it in. Then I saw the rod tip pop and the line started movin sideways, so I told him to set the hook. He just kinda leaned back and asked me to help him hold the rod. He reeled it in and my future father in law helped net it cause Hunter wanted to put it in the net. He wouldn't hold it on his own, but gladly posed with me for the picture. That was a pretty great moment, and one I wont soon forget.

Nice with the youngin getting his first of many!!!

On the females holdiong eggs thing... I think that it happens to tons of bass in every lake. Females dont release all there eggs every year, nor do all the females spawn. I have heard though, that all females develope eggs. So every year there are females with bellys that contain eggs after the spawn. I heard this from a guy who knows his stuff. I found it interesting... smile

Fished a lake near Dunvilla on Monday, saw alot of empty beds and a ton of small LM, brother-in-law had the best luck of the 3 of us catching 10, along with a few pike in 3 hours of fishing. I spent most of the time pulling my 6yr olds line out of the weeds, and one hook out of my back. I managed a few and the 6yr old caught his first rock bass. overall a good day and the 6yr olds first rock bass made his day. gonna try again on Friday solo so I hope to have a more productive day.

Great pic and story polarsus. Your kids first fish, no matter what kind is always special. That is what fishing is all about; spending time with friends and family and creating memories. Got a call the other day that the first largemouth my daughter ever caught is done at the taxidermist.

saturday my gf and i caught about 30-40 fish in 1-5 feet of water on senkos and swim jigs water temp was 69 and still had a fair amount of fish on beds. Monday i fished a different lake that had no fish on beds and we caught around 20ish fish with most comming in reed beds with other weeds mixed into them on jigs and also found a few nicer fish in 7-10 foot cabbage beds.

I caught a 20 3/4" on my second cast of the morning on a Jerkbait. After that it was pretty slow. I think we ended up with about a dozen. Most of them in the 17"-18" range. Fun to get back out there again.....
