Juan Grande
One of my goals this summer is to learn how to flip docks and milfoil. I don't need specific rod/reel brands, but could someone please recommend a seup that's good for flipping? Just rod length, action, line, gear ratio, etc. would be fine. If you have a specific combo in mind that would be fine too. I'm probably looking to spend $200-300 total. If possible, I would like rod/reel the to serve multiple purposes. Can a good flipping set up be used for slop/frog fishing? Thanks in advance.
Deitz Dittrich
Juan- are you talking flipping or pitching? A true flipping rod that you do not take extra line out of the rod is usually stiffer than a pitching rod.. Very, and I mean very few flip here in the midwest.. Our water is clear and we tend to fish farther away from the cover.. most pitch..go with a 7'2" or 7'6" MH rod if going to pitch.. if going for flipping 7'6" H rod.. line can vary.. I have 4 rods I use for pitching.. 2 are 7'2", the other 2 are 7'6".. 2 are rigged with 20 lb floro, the other two 65 power pro.. I do flip with the 7'6", but usually on rivers or lakes with a lot of stain and am fishing tight or dippin milfoil. As you know, all my stuff is Shimano. olski
I would say go with the 7'2" or 3" MH or H depending on the rod. If you were just going to fishing weeds in open water I would say 7'6" to 8' for sure but when you throw docks into the mix I feel that you can end up in some pretty tight quarters so those long rods might be tough to handle. TonkaBass
If I just had one... that 7'11" GLX with 50lb. powerpro and a curado. Done. But looking at your price range... I would say a curado and a skeet reese rod and some power pro.
Superduty
Take a look at the Vendetta by ABU Garcia. These things are very light! I used one last week on the river side by side with a MUCH more expensive rod and liked it a lot. Great rod for the money at less than $100! RK
Hiya - Like the others have mentioned I mostly pitch rather than flip, although I do flip in thick cane or rushes sometimes. I use a 7'6" flipping stick with 50# braid, and a high speed (7.1:1) reel. My reel is actually "wrong-handed" compared to my others. I use a left-hand retrieve pitching, but all my other baitcasting reels are right hand. I use a LH reel so I don't have to switch hands. Feels a little weird at first but you get used to it.You can use a flipping stick for all kinds of stuff - carolina rigs, football jigs, spoons or rats in slop... Pretty versatile rods really.CheersRob Kimm

Juan Grande
Sorry, I guess I meant pitching. Pretty obvious I'm new to it considering I don't even know what it's called I guess the two main areas I would like to apply it to would be dock fishing and pitching to holes in milfoil or pads. Thanks for the tips!
gunning
For pitching docks I like 7ft MH fast Scheels Tournment rod, it has a fast action but has a little softer tip than most and I just like it for whatever reason. I pitch with it but its real good for making short roll casts when I can't reach a target by pitching. If I'm flipping or pitching grass I use a heavy rod.I second the Abu Garcia Vendetta Rod, I actually picked one up Fri. I have two Avids and I like them a lot but that Vendetta feels great in your hands with a Revo on it. I compared the Avid and Vendetta side by side with Revos on them and I would say for just feel the Vendetta feels better, more balanced. I will have to wait to see how it fishes. They are running a deal on them right now if you pay full price on last years Revo SX (which is a good reel) you get a Vendetta free out the door for $182. I got the 7'3" heavy and I will use it for pitching grass this year.
luckycrank
7'6" mh crucial and a citica should fit in your budget.
gritsnham
I would think about getting a 7'6" rod for what you want to do. The length is great for pitching and you can get some nice long casts out of the rod when fishing slop with frogs. Get a 7.1 gear ration reel as the extra line take up helps with both fishing applications. I got a 7'6" nitro rod from BPS a couple years back and love the rod (reel not so much so I would say dont get the combo) but you can get these for a decent price online
