scsavre
I am not starting an argument. Or not trying to at least. We have all thought this, I think. I am Irish, no asked about the Fighting Irish. People who have served in the forces werent asked about the cadet names etc etc. And no one should have asked us either. What about the Blue Devils, is that offensive. I think the Sioux name and Logo are great. I dont think they should have to ask anyone for permission as long as there isnt a copyright. First come first serve. I am so gosh darn tired of this affraid to offend stuff we all go through now. No more xmas at school or work etc.Either way lets get this over, I would have to think this could cause some tension with the students and indians, for no good reason either. Steve Foss
Never took it as you wanting to start and argument, my friend. You just laid out your opinion, like we all do. I'm Irish too (don't be fooled by my Norwegian surname), and the fighting Irish never bothered me a bit. I agree completely that it's good to ignore a lot of stuff and focus on things I consider important. But I'm not Dakota, and it's not my place to tell Dakota people what should or should not offend them. And since about 67 percent of the Spirit Lake tribe and likely a similar majority of the Standing Rock tribe believe the nickname is not offensive, I reckon that will settle things in the minds of Americans, where majority rules. Anyway, I also would like to see this issue resolved. I wrote my first Grand Forks Herald story about the nickname controversy back in 1998 or 1999, and it's OLD HAT now. Kinda like talking on and on about the 1997 flood. Who cares anymore?
wolfman-k
It does seem to be a game of kick the can that has gone on way too long after the can is flattened. I too could move on more easily if the very people that the politically correct crowd claims to want to support at last have the final say in the matter. They will always be the Fighting Sioux to me. Resolution is long overdue for all concerned.
cbrooks
On the local news last night(WDAZ in GF) they had s story on the history of the Sioux logo and nickname. There was two UND professor(Amy Phillips and Dan Rice) that did the research. I thought it was interesting. Here are some of the facts from that story.UND was called the flickertails and Nodaks before the Sioux name.UND changed its name to the fighting Sioux in the fall 1930.There have been several different indian head logos the black hawk came in the late 60s.The vote to change the name wasn't done by the schools president or board of trustees; it was done by the atheletic board of control. brmuskie
This is just silly - the whole thing. The do-gooders in our society want more than anything to make us all live our lives as they see fit. They think we should be offended by the logo - so obviously we need to change the name. There are people out there that just want to force people to do and think the same as them. Some people live the democratic way and some people try to dictate. We are all being dictated here - unless the Sioux themselves say they are offended this is a huge waste of time and money. I was in HS when the redskins changed their name - who wouldn't be proud of the maroon and grey? At least they won't be changing Spoilers or Beavers anytime soon. scsavre
Agree, I still say keep it. I dont care if it does offend them, which I think most people would be proud of it. Its not like its the savages or anything. Enough out of me, Im not trying to sound like a jerk. I just dont see what the big deal is. The fighting Irish, doesnt that name come from the saying about the Irish fighting when they are drunk. I just dont care. They will always be the Sioux to me. Stinking Sioux. Maybe they can be the Soo, the Soo lines used to run the plains. Do kids still play kick the can? talk about making the best with what you had....that was fun. LMITOUT
Bismarck Tribune -Others feel it is time to end the dispute that has lingered for years."We're Dacotah people, a proud people,'' Norma Rainbow said. "Sioux is a name that was given to us. It means snake, and I'm no snake.''

Double D
Great next the bemidji state beavers will have to change there name because my wife finds it offensive.. We laugh about it now, but try to find the former Beaver College in Pennsylvania. A few years back they changed the name of the whole school. Probably one too many jokes.DD

brmuskie
The beaver liquor store has a back room to it - I have been told they play poker in there a few times a week!cbrooks - not from GF - I said I was in HS at the time of the name change. Yes - we made fun of the maroon and grey. I am from Grafton, that is why I said I was pretty sure that nobody will be asking for the spoilers to change their name. Yes, they are selling beer in concession stands. They will have mixed drinks at the club level - but you need certain BP donation amount for access ($800+ I think).BRMUSKIE, when did you graduate HS from Grafton? I'm an '89 grad. Bryce
I live next to a very successful casino and that tribe has Sioux in it's title that is all over the facilities. Obviously not that offensive when you're pulling in a $mill/year. It wil be what it is but I will always cheer for the Fighting Sioux. PierBridge
How about if the get rid of the Fighting part and go with just the Sioux?
cbrooks
I think there offended by the Sioux name itself and not the fighting part so much, because it means snake. Thats one argruement I heard anyway.
Steve Foss
The common name for the tribe came from a French Canadian contraction of "Nadouessioux" (spellings vary). The original word was from the Ottawa tribe, and some linguists believe it meant "little snake," after the tiny massasauga rattlesnake. Other linguists believe in a different origin, that it simply meant "those who speak a foreign language."The tribe's own word for itself, "Dakotah" or "Dakota," means "allies" or "allied ones."
