Team, I'm done with callin birds for others this year....well almost. I've been over-run with longtails and watched 5 die in my decoys. I have a newbie going to the Clearwater again this weekend but I'm going to whack me a good'n. 3 youth hunters are satisfied beyond belief and 2 guests are happy. I'm done, I'm done screwing around. Something photoworthy will perish this weekend. 3rd 5 hour drive in the last 3 weeks! Birds have been aplenty just never had so little success dragging a hangin beard bird in! Strutter stays in the truck, ran one good bird off already. Stand by for a central Idaho report, I'm headed to the land of the 5 bearded wonder. Confident, yep I am.

Got mine yesterday. Won't make the record books but we're on the boards - 21.5lbs, 10" beard, short spurs. I'll try to get pics up tomorrow. Also got one of my buds kids a bird this morning. Going again Sat to try to get his other boy his first.

jumpacablez: just to let you know i had a great hunt, thursday morning hunt will haunt me the rest of my life you cant imagine on how many times i already ran that morning threw my mind. i did call in a small tom but it really wont score good so i wont register it, it only went 18.5#'s and had a 5 inch beard. i did call this one in using 2 feeding hen decoys and a differnt call. ya know its not how big the bird is to me its the memories of the hunt that counts and to me this year is one that i wont ever forget. i'm even thinking of trying the black hills next year. good luck and enjoy

jump - as always the key was either being where they want to go or finding one in the right mood, or better yet a combo of the two. I really didn't spend enough time hunting to get a good feel for what they were doing or what they did or didn't want calling wise.

For us it was a mix of lots of birds in the area, knowing it well, and plenty of luck.

Sad to say but i came up empty handed once again....3rd year in a row.

They where quiet everyday but this morning they where gobbling a lot and answering to my call then it just went quiet and nothing ever happend. then tonight it was dead silent again. Had a really nice tom walk about 100 yards out from me sunday morning. Seen lots of deer during my time out there.

Ill just have to not give up and try again this fall and next spring.

Also great job cooter!! laugh

LC,

I've spent 11 days in the turkey woods already..........

Harvest thus far: 2 in for first time youth hunters, 4 for first time adults, 1 for long time hunting pal. Me ZERO. I still have till 5/25 in ID and OR so I'll likely still get a whack at one. Doing everything but the mechanical part (pulling the trigger) is still a hoot. BUT I still have an itch that needs to be scratched! Statistically it's been a weird year. I've had a total of 41 jakes and only one hangin beard inside of 35 yards.

Here are a few pics

Borch,

Did you notice the 3 color phases in the pictures....eastern, merriams & "mutt"? All Idaho Birds.

I was gonna ask about that. Didn't realize you had Easterns out there. Beautiful country you get to hunt. They say trout don't live in ugly places, guess that's true of turkeys also.

Keep at it WD!

Yeah I did. We have noticed the same things while hunting the Black Hills. They are supposed to be full Merriams but you definitely see some hybreds as well.

Gottem Finally. Last night in the rain we got setup right under their roosting tree about 6:30. @ 8:00 they showed up in numbers, I mean they were running all over the place. 6 or 7 Jakes 1 with 7" beard, 5 or 6 hens. They just kept going back and forth all around us here and there. Until finally I got to pull the trigger sending a Spitfire down range and connecting. Got the dirty bugger but not without a little help from the Benili. 19lbs8oz, 7" beard. When I say (Gottem Finally) I have been helping my dad, uncle, And cousin hunt their birds. That’s 3 seasons and 2 days I have been in the field hunting these things and now I produced one. Good times

Just checking in, so far, i have seen a dosen birds, and yesterday, i should of had one, but what do you do, i am hoping to drop the hammer on thursday, even if it takes all day, boy is there some big birds running around there.

My question is why they are not responding to my calls? box call mouth call, slate call, nothing is bringing them boys to me, frustration really set in yesterday afternoon and then the woods went nuts with birds, if i would have stayed sitting where i was and not chose to go back to my blind, i would have meat in the frezer. I am thinking that i had some real door knobs on the other side of the fence, who wouldnt put there calls down, it was yelp yelp pause, crow call, yelp yelp pause barred owl, all day, i am wondering if that could change the there behavier. but was exciding. do you think i should call on thursday?
