Went back to the same farm this morning. Set up on the edge of the field all the birds flew into yesterday. Second morning of the week with ZERO gobbles heard. What's up with that?

I had two decoys out, a hen and a jake. About 6:15 two hens came into my decoys, then 4 geese came in, then a coyote. All at the same time. The coyote eyed all these birds and KNEW he had no shot at any of them, so he left.

About 45 minutes after the hens fed out of sight over a large rise in the field I snuck up to that rise to see if anything else was out there. I watched the two hens for a couple minutes, then I saw a full fan rise up out of a low spot in the field. The hens seemed to be heading my general direction so I got comfortable and waited. I'd peek over the top every few minutes to keep an eye on them. After a while I could tell they were headed farther north from my position, so I ducked down and headed around a rise off the edge of the field and snuck up behind a pine tree right at the edge. All three birds were right there. The tom was at the edge of my range, but since I got a real good pattern with my gun out to 50 yards just last week I wasn't too concerned. He was closer than that. At the shot he took off running then flew all the way to Wisconsin as close as I could tell. Three shots in two mornings on the same farm. Grrrrrrrrrrr..............

I have no idea what happened here. The bird was no more than 40 yards and since I just shot the gun and was real confident, well...what do you do?

I'm planning on sitting in the woods tonight to try and roost some new birds then hit 'er hard again in the morning. Wish me luck. I need LOTS of it!

Come on Cooter, lets hear it. Or maybe you're starting to feel sorry for me?

Don,

Is you sight system still where it was when you patterned?

I've seen scopes, red dots and open sights come apart with the turkey gun recoil more than once.

Sorry about your bad luck.

Then again you might have a bad case of the yips.

Hope not. wink

Congrats duckhntr!!!!!! Email me those photos and I'll post 'em for you. Nice one? (they're all looking nice to me right now)

No luck last night or this morning for me. Had one gobble at least 200 times but wouldn't come any closer that a couple hundred yards from me. One more shot tonight..... I do still have my WS season in a couple weeks. We hunt that MUCH more serious than this one, so even if I strike out here there's still a good chance.

BTW, I shot my gun this morning and can't blame it on equipment failure. frown

The property owner was having some issue with property lines with the neighbors and had to have the land surveyed. The field you see the turkeys in where it looks like a mound system is not where I can Hunt. I was sitting about 8 feet off the line with with my decoys. Better luck next years I guess.

Have a technical question. How do you capture a quote that says original post from so in so and then you can pick out part of the message and attach it to a reply? Just wanted to pick on a few of the other team. Seems that if you look at the posted thread for turkey registration not all are doing so well. I know there is a lot of time left. Any way anyone help?

Just click on the "quote" box on the bottom of the post you want to use. You can then delete any parts of their quote inside the quote box. You can add your text ahead of or behind (or both) the quote. Hope that makes sence.

Sorry guys. No last hour success stories. Did have a conversation with a gobbler tonight, but he flew up to roost before he got to me. frown

My WS season starts May 5th. Better stories from there, promise. wink

I figured out how to post the pics and I still can't figure out what I was doing wrong. Oh well, thanks for offering help and please disregard the email that I shot you. It wasn't a bad bird for my first merriam, but nothing huge.

Sorry it didn't happen for you. Can we combine more then one turkey hunt? Or dose it just run tell the end of June and all hunts are fair game. And thanks on how to reply on quits.

In the contest you get to register your first bird. Even if you have to have several hunts to get it.

Sorry boys I didn't get it done. I had a great season with numerouse encounters with birds. I did pass on a couple differant Jakes trying kill a big one. I had one jake the first night come in to 25 yrds. which was cool. To be honest I didn't want my season to end that soon.

I did not get a bird either. I had several coming in but not would come out of the woods. We did do a stalk on 2 toms that were chasing some hens. Got within 50 yards and could not get any closer without being seen.

All in all it was a good time hunting.

Maybe we need to change our team name to "No Beards"

Well you do know that there are two kinds of turkey hunters.

Those who have missed and then those who are going to miss.

Doesn't matter how good you are. It'll happen to us all.

I'm in the first group by the way. Got my miss out of the way several years ago.

Those who have missed, and those who who say they have not missed is more like it.

Don't feel too bad guys. From what I've been hearing (and experiencing firsthand) it's been a tough season so far.

I DO take my Sconnie season pretty seriously, so there's hope.

Yes Donbo its up to you. We are one for six. Thanks to Duckhunter. Does anybody have any idea who's on the leader board at this time? It sounds like the other teams are struggling as well. Even in town were I live and up north were I hunt I have not heard of any great stories from the locals. Still nice to be on this forum to here and see other,s having better luck then I did. So Donbo don't join the woulda coulda shoulda experience like the rest of us. Other then are top dog Duckhunter. The team is expecting you to pull through for us. So as to not be on the bottom of the list. The best of luck to ya.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
