Yeah I don't think moonies or goldies have a dorsal fin like that. Impressive you got one to bite, that is pretty rare. Nice!

They get pretty darn big in that area:

i was using spinning gear fot the redhorse and carp, flies for shad.

my buddy had the hot fly though. he was using a size 12ish green scud. we think that it worked because it resembled algae. we were seeing the shad eat clumps of algae off the surface.

i was using a size 18 copper john and i failed to get a shad

does anyone know if the proposed changes to the Coon Rapids dam may affect our fishing access? Sure wish we had better access to the water below the big dam- you can see the schools of monster carp (and probably buffalo too) in the summer.

carpman Jake, are you catching those lunkers already in a river? Are you using the same tactics as summer or do the coldwater carp require a different technique?

i dont know what the plans are in detail, however the proposed plan is designed to prevent the asian carp from going up stream. there is an "island" below the dam [more like a peninsula] that you can walk all it's shorelines with quiet waters available to catch some of these big carp and more [walleys, smallmouth, pike, cats ect.]. also the boat landing area is a good place for carp. good luck.
