Auger mount for snowmobile

lindy rig

Recommended Posts

Looking to balance that machine out a bit, eh?

My auger sits in the rubber "V's" of the Mad Dog kit I bought for my ATV. It's pretty simple but you might have to get hardware that will fit a custom application.

The key is the holders and the aluminum blocks they screw into. Just get the blocks mounted.

You've seen it Steve, you just didn't look at it. I'll post pics later.

FYI, I purchased a quick disconnect at the ice fishing show and plan to make some sort of mount for my powerhead that will attach to the the rack on the back of my 2-up sled. I will store the auger in an otter shield inside my portable.

I think it will be much easier to fab up something that will just mount the powerhead.

I believe the quick disconnects are still available on some of the major sporting goods retail chains.

Thanks, BM!

I really like the idea of taking the heaviest single piece of gear off the rear suspension and putting it up front. I wonder if any company makes and sells these.

On all these links there are a lot of good ideas for mounting augers on the back of sleds, but I agree with Foss and trying to find one to mount on the front getting more weight off the rear springs! Two of the old posts, one from munchy71 which was pretty heavy duty and mounted across the inside of the hood and one from Fred Bear which looks like it's mounted just on the front bumper may work. The only thing I didn't like about the one from munchy71 is that he has it resting on one of the plastic SM handles which have had some breaking issues. The one from Fred Bear doesn't really show how they mounted it to the front bumper and I wonder if the bumper by it's self can handle the weight and bunching it would take over time. If you have a two up sled and need to carry a buddy once in a while with all the other weight stacked up on the back springs could cause them to go out qwick or break. So I'm still thinking about a good way to do it without maybe drilling holes in the hood for support bars which would not help the resale some day. frown Steve Foss, did you ever get those rear springs adjusted up yet after adding the condo box on the back of your sled? smile

Well, here they are in all their used and put away dirty state. smirk

How they mount. You could see if the u-bolt pattern would go around the front bumper of your sled or if you don't mind drilling, I'm sure it will fit.

You get several mounting options with the way the blocks are machined.

I was a little worried if the bolts on the bottom of the "V" would hold up but they've done fine. And I've usually been carrying my 10" 3hp auger instead of the 8" pictured. The 10 is a couple pounds heavier.

I haven't run the moguls with this on but I haven't been putting slowly either. Standard lake conditions up to 50 mph.

I like it.

I welded a piece of round tubing onto the handle of the auger. I have done this to a jiffy and a nils and it worked just fine on both. I realize you can't do this with plastic SM handles but it would be a pretty easy fix.

The auger rack I made and how it connects to the sled is a bulletproof system and I don't drive any differently with the auger on. Pretty simple too, just set the auger on, strap on 2 bungees and your ready to go.

I realize this post is worthless without pics, but I won't be able to take any until mid march when I'm in Ontario for spring break. I'll put some up of my new luggage rack also.

Fishwater is correct. Yes, all the hardware seen is included plus some other stuff not seen that I use to mount them on my ATV.

I grabbed the set when Sportsman's was closing. I was suprised to see them there at that point in the sale. Heavily discounted. cool

My mad dog auger holder works great on my Nils.I mounted a big T on the back of my sled and used the mad dog holders with it and it works great. Ill try to get pics up. Mine comes off in about 4 minutes with just 2 bolts needing to come off.

Where can a fella get two of the Mad Dog gun mounts? The only packages I see include a single gun mount and two Velcro mounts, and the way tracy has his set up looks a lot better than using the Velcro mounts. Does a guy have to buy TWO Mad Dog kits to get two gun mounts?

The Mad Dog works great on my Nils. Never had an issue.

The trick is to angle them so that the fins do their job.

Good Point. I was using a friend's wheeler and the mount was set up perpendicular to the auger shaft. It worked fine with his auger but the Nils flighting was too tight so it didn't fit in the mount very well. Changing the angle of the mount would have fixed the problem.

Good advice dtro.

Leech~

Maybe you got the actual auger rack system from Mad Dog. This has a three point system. If it is then you got it at a good price. wink

Here are some images of Paul Waldowski's system:

If you are up by Appeldoorn's on Mille Lacs, stop by and swing in. I am very sure Paul will let you see his system up close. smile

Yeah, they sell a combo pack with some plastic ram style mounts for attaching to racks & the metal handlebar mounts. The brass handle bar mounts are the way to go, and as DTRO pointed out are about 30% cheaper if you can just find that setup alone.
