LBG I read as much as I could...then puked in disgust...and threw in my two cents. NOT once have I been on the lake in the winter and had a problem getting around someone, never, not one time, been ice fishing for 20 years... (and for 5 years I drove a VW Jetta, sad, but yes, a Jetta... If I were out on the lake and stopped my Explorer in the road, just honk and I will know what to do if you swing by...

On a side note, my canoe flew off the top of my Explorer this summer going 55 mph on hwy 101 at 6am...sounded like a dumptruck fell of the empire state building...threw it back on top, went to the lake and she still floats...so go ahead and bump away:)

And to Hoffer...

Not a big deal. Dont sweat it. Just try not to do it again.

I'm more annoyed with peoples responses and sense of entitlement that they can do whatever they want whenever, without regard for other people.

BEST REPLY RIGHT HERE YET!!!

This thread has some legs.

Hoffer sorry you had to experience that jerk out there. I for the life of me cant see why he would react that way in that situation, uncalled for.

I think its the grocery cart syndrome. You know when your shopping for groceries and you just want to pick up your stuff and go and every isle you go into you have Wilma and Betty talking blocking the isle or one person with the cart just as-cued so you cant get around. At least out on the ice we dont walk into a cloud where someone farted then snuck around to another isle all innocent. laugh

Quote:
Are you kidding me? Here you are saying how everyone has rights to the same area, but your upset when someone invades your space? Talk about a hypocrite. You're the ME ME ME. Dont come by ME when I'm in a canoe. Dont troll by ME.

Apparently you didn't read my post good enough. No one should ever troll in and out of other boats while they are all within 10 feet of each other. We were the first ones out to this spot that day and everyone followed and crowded us in. All boats were anchored within 10 - 20ft of each other. No big deal it is a very small lake and everyone has a right to sit where the fish were at that time. But when 2 morons in a bigger boat start trolling in between all the boats and every one else has to pull lines out of the water, that is a little rediculous. So if YOU are trolling a lake and I happen to be in the area you want to troll, should I have to take my line out of the water for you to troll through. I don't think so. That daredevil trick sounds like a great idea at that time. Because if you are someone that would do that and have that little respect for the rest of us then you would deserve it. Heck I will even meet you on shore after that for a little discussion.

And yes, I was referring to those posters that did get on and say that "if you don't have a 4x4 then you should walk out." Give me a break. Now I have to walk out because I don't have a 4x4??? Also I stated that if you felt the OP was in the wrong for parking where he did then stop and say hi and politely suggest that maybe he try and get off the "path" a little more so more people could get around him. He stated he forgot his shovel and in that case then yes he would need help. But you wouldn't know until you stopped and asked instead of complaining about having to drive around him. Which he said many people did after he was parked. So again was it really that big of a deal if people were still able to go around?

I am always more than willing to drill holes for people, help them get unstuck, show them where I was catching fish, and keep an eye on other people's fish houses when they are not there, etc. I take new people fishing all the time and let them use my best equipment. Heck most of the time I barley get to fish. But I get more pleasure out of taking new people fishing and seeing the happy looks on ther faces when they catch something. So if this all makes me selfish then oh well, I guess. Like I said no matter what you do with even the best of intentions someone is going to get mad about it.

Anyways, like Harveylee said "DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO TO YOU"

We are all responsible for our own actions, good and bad.

Slightly off topic, but to those who say

"if you dont have the right equipment, dont go fishing."

You are right for the most part.

This can be a big safety issue. This is to anyone participating in outdoor sports with inadequate gear(dont want to just pick on Hoffler). He didn't have a shovel, didn't have warm clothing (cause he was just going to fish from the car), didn't have a plan to turn around before entering the path, didn't have 4WD. The list goes on and on. You dont need to have a million dollars to enjoy a sport, but you do need to be smart about it. This is a disaster waiting to happen. Next thing we know there is a 911 call coming in because someone is broken down on the ice, stuck, with no warm clothes. Then its our 1st responders that are sent out there to save him.

This is my 2 cents on the topic Hoffer...the guy had a 4 wheel drive truck if hes making that big of a deal cuz he cant go around and off-road it for a few feet then hes a p@nsy! Its not like hes going mudding or anything or its a plowed road or resort road! Same stuff happens on Mille Lacs when guys off-road it to the flats.

I agree with Jameson though plan ahead always bring a shovel if you don't have 4 wheel drive or a sled or wheeler and just plan to walk. We got alot of snow this year and all I got is a car so I am limited as you were..so I just walk alot, pack light and I even still get out spearing with all that gear. Our forefathers had it way much harder than we did so I figure I can walk 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile to the spot instead of getting stuck and depend on someone to pull me out.

The best post yet Bluegill. I did the same when I was younger. Never rely on others to bail you out by chancing it with inadequate equipment. and yea people are way too lazy today compared to our past. I'm betting the guys who say its bull$hit to walk out are the ones that the most activity they get is walking to the fridge.

So...heres a funny update. Went out to the same place this afternoon - this time with a shovel smile

Get to a spot on the path about where I had parked before - and lo and behold someone had plowed a perfect path out and around the point that I was fishing by. It was perfect!

So, I pulled up a ways on the plowed road, parked in the middle and drilled a few holes right there.

Ha-ha...I actually pulled up a ways and parked over to the side and the plowed road had plenty of room for other cars to go past. Funny thing is that it allowed me a close walk to where I originally was planning on going and where I usually set up. So, today I am at the spot that i wanted to go - and set up for 5 hours with no flags. Compared to the other day when I was out and had to park and fish in a spot that I really didnt want to - and had 2 flags with one that broke my line! So..go figure!

The one thing I am really wondering is if someone possibly read this thread and figured out the spot in question? Then went out and plowed a road. I have fished this particular area for quite a number of years and have never seen a plowed path around there. Plus, the area directly off the access and leading out to where I was parked was still just a path...not plowed. It was only plowed starting directly at the spot where I was parked before...

Seems we do not practice that much any longer in todays all about ME society.

To me this also describes someone who would park and block a main trail on a lake. This works both ways.

The guys vehicle may not have been able to get any further, I could care less if he parked there. So easy to just drive around him.

man, why does everyone get so up tight over a car on the lake.

Maybe a simple cure would be to offer to help him or maybe go around him.

Would it be that tough????? Easier to complain about it than to simply go around him.

Life is to short for these kinds of deals.

I do not understand the big issue here.

Sure seems to be alot of what ifs!

What if there was no road?

"What if" hoffer would have originally made the "path" to where he was fishing, would mad guy have still been mad because he didn't finish making the path. Maybe hoffer should carry a DEAD END PATH sign next to the shovel he will remember next time he goes out.

It's quite clear that there are different opinions on this, but once again, hoffer asked for our opinions....and he sure got them laugh

In both cases, (hoffer and the truck) they each could have thought to themselves, how would the other person feel in this situation.

Fishing is supposed to be Anger Management Therapy, and not Anger Origination.

And yeah, why the heck aren't we out fishing? It's a beautiful day!

Even though I fish a couple of times a week in the winter, I like to use the time to rest up for those 15 day straight marathon summer nights chasing cats. Averaging 4 hours/night of sleep for a few weeks in a row starts to wear on ya laugh

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
