So what was it this last weekend that was so special?

I heard some of the best reports this year from this past weekend from all over the state. I seen pictures of huge fish brought through the ice, including a 51” Musky, a 45” Pike, Huge Lake Trout and some Hog Walleyes, not to mention fast action for Crappies, Perch, and Cats.

So was it the weather?

More people fishing?

Global Warming?

When will it happen again laugh

I think it's because you finally got up to Bruntside and got a little excitement which got your blood flowing again! laugh

Sunday was an awesome day with the decreased light levels and low pressure. The fish were very aggresive and easy to catch. Monday was a different story as the front passed. The fish were a bit tougher to catch and less aggresive. We had to downsize quite a bit to catch them. Now that the pressure is stabalizing we should see the activity start to pick back up soon. It was fun while it lasted. cool

Global Warming is the cause for everything. I bet it's that. wink

I have noticed that anytime a "slow" moving storm system, the fishing stays better longer before the storm comes through. I think when the bar. press. falls slowly for an extended pd of time is when the fishing stays good for any period of time. Just my observations/opinions. I notice this alot, especially during summer.

Yeah the lower pressure does usually make for better fishing. I’ve seen that too, but for some reason, the big fish were really being caught this past weekend. I try and pay close attention to that stuff all year, but something sure seemed different with all the big fish being caught throughout the state.

Well Dtro to answer your question the reason is that I've been fishing every single weekend without much success. So i decided to take a break last weekend and get some work done around the house. So seeing as how I wasn't on the lakes god decided to make all the fish go bonkers just to smite me. Hope everyone else enjoyed the weekend

Traxx, did Greg fish with you all weekend? Were you guys out on Gull or the other secret lake? I wish I could have made it up for Sundays fishing from the sounds of it. The eyes still biting on the Nland buckshots?

The Griz said in a Dennis Anderson article he had the best fishing the other week when it was high:

"You're a day late,'' he said.

The wind had shifted and now blew from the east. Also the barometer had dropped.

Griz had a few perch on the ice. But no walleyes.

"The lake shut down,'' he said. "Yesterday I got those four walleyes right away. I caught 24 in all. Not today.''

Low or high, I think a sudden/drastic shift in the pressure has more of an effect on the bite!

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
