Fishing alone

Thanks Steve.

No prob, man. Look forward to the day he shows up on your doorstep as an accomplished young adult fisherman and wants to take the old grandad fishing. You and he both know who taught whom what. smilesmile

Old fishermen always die sooner or later, but the love and wisdom they pass on lives forever.

I have four sons and numerous friends to fish with but at least half the time I'm alone. I work rotating shifts with rotating days off so it's sometimes hard to find someone to fish with. There are times when I head to a distant lake for two or three days, sleep in the truck topper when I'm tired, eat when the spirit moves me, and try strange fishing ideas that no one else is a witness to. Sometimes they even work. I've fished with guys who insist on hitting a cafe or a bar or their own bed for the evening. I never force myself to do that. Funny how that works.

I fish alone about half the time because I don't like to have to wait for unreliable/terminally late people. I seem to have come upon a streak of them, and the rest of my buddies usually can't get a kitchen pass more than twice a year.

I bring my kids the other half of the time. It is totally different with them because you need to keep them engaged, which means alot more work. Portable DVD player in the fish house is a huge plus. However, when they do get fish, it is the ultimate reward to see the pure excitement. (Such as my oldest son's first pumpkinseed in my avatar).

As I've grown older I do like to have company whether it be my wife, sons, brothers or my dad.

Here too MarkAlm. I use to really like ice fishing by myself, but there are days when I really hit the bite, I wish someone was there to share it with! My son is in his third year at College so I've had plenty of me time! For some reason I still like to fish in the boat by myself? It maybe because it's so hard to keep maneuvering the boat so two can fish, and pulling up and going when you want is easier. Sitting in one spot in a porty is nice having someone to talk with and you don't have to keep moving the boat! smile Plus it maybe that I can never get anyone up that early in the summer to go fishing?

My grandson has been my fishing partner winter and summer for 10 years or so, we used to rent a camp on black lake every summer for a couple weeks and he always was ready to go even at 5am but now my daughter and soninlaw are getting divorced and he has gone to live with his father and I don't care if I go fishing or not. I go some but it is not the same.

Lester dont give up on him. Its tough right now for all im sure, but dont quit giving the invite to him and maybe even his dad. You never know what can happen.

Me fishing alone, Yeah I need it, I have to have it once in a while. Sometimes as others have said you just want to do what you want to do without worrying if the person your with is having fun or they think your too serious about fishing. BUT, I have found the best of both worlds, a wife who picked out my last 3 Ranger Boats, and she understands when I say I wanna go alone. As long as it isnt to many times without her with me. And its not because she wants to be with me, its cause she wants to fish! And shes the one who sometimes says, We need to try something else!! Lets go!

I take my son with as much as I can, but as a previous poster stated, it is a lot more work. Extra food/drinks, extra hole or two, keeping him busy/interested if the bite is slow and so on.

That said, I also enjoy being out there alone.

Well, some day he will be gone off to College and you may think back on missed time together? I do! frown

Well, I have about 14 years until that happens. We'll have plenty of time to fish until then. I hope even when that time comes, we can still get out to the lake together.

When you go alone you can solve all the worlds problems in 3 or 4 hours of fishing. Then you go again in a couple of days and do it all over again. But the best time I have had was taking my 4 yr. old grand daughter with me. To watch the look on her face is one of the best feelings I have ever had in the out of doors. Thanks and take a young one fishing and you will no doubt see the same thing I saw. Thanks, Scheuney

I fish alone often. I like it because when you want to do anything you just do it! NO asking the (what do you think)question or waiting for gear to be loaded. When i go with other people it is more like fishing independently with other people. Your each in your own flip over and you can still talk or whatever. Your space is yours!

I like fishing alone most of the time, but I do miss having a buddy along. I don't worry about whether or not they want to move or try something else because usually they don't expect to catch fish anyway and they're just along for the company. Fishing is a lot more fun when you don't have the pressure to catch fish and you can just relax and enjoy nature (and any fish if you catch some).

I fish by myself more in the boat than on the ice. We've got a house that 3 of us went in on so there's usually somebody always out there or other friends stopping by to wet a line. I do enjoy fishing by myself sometimes, just sucks when there's no one there to hold the camera.

Nah, The pic is in my wheelhouse, I greased the axles and hubs before I went out that day

and was too lazy to put it away. I think it might still be there. Wait till I need it again,

I'll forget where I left it. I'm getting to the point where I can hide my own Easter Eggs. wink

As mentioned, it's definitely a blast to go with buddies, family, etc. But I sometimes wonder if I don't enjoy fishing alone moreso than with somebody else. There's alot to be said for being alone with your thoughts, moving if you feel like moving, having it as warm or cool in the house as you please, the list goes on and on.

I do enjoy fishing alone.

I like to go by myself too.

I don't have anything to really worry about when I fish by myself. Nobody wanting to go here or there, go home, get food, make a pit stop, use my stuff ect.

Its nice too because there isn't a problem if I feel like leaving early or staying late. I like being on my own schedule.

For whatever reason I almost always do better when I'm on my own too. I'm still not sure why that is but its almost a written rule for me. I am almost always told I'm telling stories until they see the pictures.

That all being said I still like to go with my dad or friends from time to time. It is nice especially in the winter. We can take different vehicles and come and go as we please.

I much prefer fishing with a partner, be it my sister or my girlfriend, or my dad or grandpa, or heck a friend of a friend who I just met.

I get as much if not more peace and serenity with a partner. I just must have good friends and family who make good fishing partners.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
