Rod Suggestions

Irish

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for a new rod. I bought a high speed daiwa zillion reel this fall. I am having trouble deciding what type of rod to put on it. I know I want 7 foot medium rod but don't know where to go from there. I was looking at the St. Croix Mojo Bass rods. Would this be a good line of rods? If so what one should I put on my reel.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Irish

I fished them last summer and I liked them. For the money they are hard to beat. I am currently liquidating my rod collection and got a few mojos for sale over in the new and hard to use classified section. I got 7'mh, 7m, 6'6mh if you are interested, let me know.

I think I would sit tight for a month or 2 for the new stuff to come out. Alot of rod companies are going to put out a line in the Mojo price range and I have seen a few of them and I think you might find something you like better. The Lamiglas Exel line is VERY nice for that $. Also Falcon has a rod in that market that is defunetly worth looking at. You might have a hard time finding some of the locally but go to the sports show you should be able to see them there and order on line if you can't pick one up in town.

Irish, would love to be able to help you out here. What do you plan on doing with this rod?.. I see you have 7' Med as your rod you are looking for.. Are you going to fish Spinnerbaits and Cranks?.. Shakey worm?

I believe that the Mojo rods are made overseas,or Mexico, and shipped over for St Croix. Just St. Croix's higher end rods are still made in WI. I was just told that Loomis Rods are now being made in Asia as well, but I have not had time to verify that information. Any hear that as well?

I would like to get a rod I can use for jerkbaits and crankbaits. Is it possible to get a rod that can do both?

Thanks for the suggestion on the Compre rod. I like the price on it as well although I would be willing to spend a bit more. If you know of rod that you like even more than the Compre in the $150 price range I'd love to hear about it.

You're likely looking at the best rod for the dollar with the Compre. Solid and well designed rod with a great warranty behind it. The Shimano rod line is really a great offering overall. I've even gone a step below the Compre line to the Clarus and been more than happy with them.

I'd opt for the Compre to get a quality rod and spend the $50 on crankbaits!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I really like the looks of both the Compre and the Crucial rods. I think I will have to go to Cabela's and see them for myself. It will be a tough descion but since I have the money I am leaning towards the Crucial. Unfortunately I have about 4 months to decide.

Thanks,

Irish

Irish-- I will be at cabelas in about a month.. If you want to stop in and talk rods and compare them. I'll be working the Rogers store March 6th and 7th.. and 20th-21st.

Note to self- Take 6th-7th and 20-21st off. HAHA.

I will definitely try to make it up to Cabela's one of the days you are there Deitz.

Okay, one last question. I have always fished braid on all my rods. I really like and have a lot of confidence in performing when I need it to but but I was wondering if I should load up my zillion with flouro for the cranks and jerkbaits.

Any suggestions on what brand and weight of line?

Irish- you can stick with braid. Its one of those things.. Find what works best for you. What works well for me may or may not work for anyone else.

However, on lures that have their own action. IE Spinnerbaits and Cranks.. You are just pulling them in pretty much. when the fish hits, your rod and line should give some or you tend to not hook them as well if your line or rod is too stiff.. Its why people use Glass rods at times for cranks.. Floro will have some stretch.. and seems to be what people like. I say try it, if you dont like it, rip it off and put braid back on. Try 10lb or 12 if you do try the floro.

Irish,

Check out the brand new TFO rods.

They're designed to whip up on both St. Croix and G-Loomis, for good reason too. My friends at Temple Fork Outfitters (Dallas-Ft.Worth) hired Gary Loomis to design the rods. They're downright wicked, especially when you consider the price. Every rod in the line is $99. I've been with TFO for 5 years and their stuff kicks butt. Most of you haven't heard of TFO before, but they'll be making a big splash here in the Midwest very soon...

From what I heard Gary Loomis doesn't do anything for TFO besides collect money from them to use his name. I highly doubt that Gary Loomis would design rods using IM6. For $99 they seem to be a good bargain though. Would like to see one.
