Oneida Lake Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Looking forward to it smilesmile. As of now, Sat also looks good for me. Lets hope the weather gods cooperate, early forecasts don't indicate much in the way of snow, I think only the wind might be able to change our plans.

Fished VB today with John, Ricky and John's friend Tom. John gps the hole he caught that big walleye out of and sure enough he was on it when we made it out there. Today was almost a carbon copy of the others we have had in this area. Fish not terribly aggresive, marked a fair number most would not hit and then dead sea time with maybe one or two marked in an hour. John ended up with 10 perch and a walleye, Tom had only 1 perch, Ricky had 8 perch and I had 9 perch. Most of the perch were nice solid fish and we had some nice males today.

Unfortunately, no fish today on the Thunder special and no fish on one of Tims favorites the sexy hexy. We may give it a go tomorrow depending on the winds.

so far Saturdays weather

Saturday, Feb 20

Day

High: 35°F RealFeel®: 23°F

Mostly cloudy and breezy with a couple of snow showers

Winds: W at 14mph

Wind Gusts: 27 mph

seems like 14-27mph winds from the west would be to much for the east end? will have to check the weather tomorrow and see what they say. We really look forward to another trip to Oneida but not if we will get blown off the lake.

Fished Jewell with Frank and did the Oneida stroke. One perch, one cod wink Something broke off my kastmaster and Franky lost a nice one probably a walleye. Anyway the walking was getting interesting with more snow on the lake, there were areas closer to shore where slush was coming up on 4 to 7" of snow. eek I agree with King need to find a place off the wind as much as possible to fish Saturday and the east end of Oneida doesn't look good right now. Talked to Maki and he cancelled his trip to CNY because of the predicted winds, Luke and Scott are on fishing local today...

King - fished the Big O yesterday. Thanks to modern technology, John's gps and my orange peel, fished the exact same area as the day before. Bite was terrible, 1 big jumbo for John and me and didn't mark much of anything. I moved about 5 times before I found a few perch. Caught 6 real nice ones wink out of the last hole in a shade over 20'. Gave John and Tom a shout out and they caught 5 good ones next to me. I don't think I marked much more than 10 fish all day. Highlight of the day was the 20 1/2" walleye shocked I popped out of third hole I drilled. For about 10 minutes it was more of the same - nothing. Finally put on a flash lure (1/8 oz deadly Richard), marked something high about 8' off of bottom and then it was hang on.

The winds of Oneida were tolerable early morning but became pretty bad by mid-morning. Around 11:30 the wind was howling pretty good and the snow produced near white-out conditions. I think the forecast was for 10 to 20 out of the west, northwest. We left shortly after and got off the lake (by 4 wheeler) without incident.

Walking is an absolute joy mad . Between the snow we have got over the last few days and the drifts, walking is pretty tough so get ready for a good workout. The areas you and Chris fished last weekend are probably not accessible by foot.

FishK - The wind on Oneida is a differnt beast! Completly diff than other boddies of water. Sure its fishable at 15-25 but can become prety annoying and drift towards uncomfortable...

and that is why we are canceling our 1 1/2 hour trip to Oneida tomorrow and staying local instead.

Wise decision King don't think tomorrow would be a good time to be on this end of the big O. Good luck on the local waters. We are going to sit it out.

Dark Cloud - "prety annoying and drift towards uncomfortable.. "

you could be just as easily talking about fishing with Timmy smile

I was gonna say good luck, but I know you guys will hammer them. Expect to see some nice pics of some bulls 9" and up. Big sunnies and blues on ultralight equipment is a lot of fun.

Have a nice day.

Fishingking- the first gps spot closest to shore about 75 yards west of that is where CNY Bruce and Salmonseeker73 found a small school. Jim Faso led the way with 15 or so nice perch wink and throw in 5 ea. from me, Bruce and Frank frown. That's how are day was... We checked both of Tim's areas and they were pretty dead and Jim Faso moved west 75 yards and boom he had a small school he pulled 8 out of before they moved along.. cool No pictures unfortunately but I did text pic Jay a few perch in the bucket. While Dad, Jay and Billy were finding some very nice sunfish... But I have to tell you the fishing paled completely to the comedy that Jim and I saw. Let me set it up for you.

O.K. guys you know the drill, it's late your tired you have about an hour left to fish, you haven't had an enthusiastic screen full all day, you find yourself drifting in and out of consciousness as your warm and dry inside your shanty. Needless to say your alittle giidy since you have been awake since 4 a.m....

Well Bruce was the first one to call it a day fishing so we said our goodbyes to Bruce and Jim and I went back to our traps to get out of the wind... Well I look out the window of my Otter and I see Bruce with his helmet on sitting on the back of Franks sled, Franky was driving and they were getting ready to leave. After a couple of seconds of silence after Frank and Bruce departed Faso said., "Timmy is that a fishtrap over there off to my left?" I go yes it is???

Holy carp!!! Those guys didn't check the rigging! So like a amart @$$ I get my cell phone out and take a picture of the left luggage and mail said picture to Frank's cellphone and the captions was "Forget Something?" I mean I can't believe you would n't look back once while towing? I believe Frank also has side mirrors on his sled. whistle So while they were still driving in Jim Faso and I are trying to figure out how Franky is gonna spin this so it was not his fault. I told Jim that Frank would figure out away to balme it on Bruce. grin Jim and I are laughing laugh are keesters off for the next couple of minutes. As Jim and I are talking about the myriad of stories that could generate from this incident our laughter grew louder and louder. laugh As were laughing and carrying on my phone rings and I hollar to Jim that it's Bruce.. laugh Looking forward to this call Bruce say's, "Timmy I think I lost my trap 1/2 way in. can you see it? Histerically I said, "Bruce I can barely see anything it's a white out the only thing I can see is two fish traps to my left." laugh Bruce insists "DO YOU SEE MY TRAP? I broke down histarically for about 30 seconds Faso is laughing so hard and I am about to burst. laugh Finally composing myself I said quietly, "You never left with your trap.. You left it right where you started." crylaugh We tried to stop laughing and just couldn't Jim and I were enjoying this and if you guys were out there you would have been dying laughing. So after Bruce was relieved to here the embarassing news I rubbed it in and fowarded the same pic and caption to Bruce that I sent to Frank earlier.. In the mean time Franky comes back to pick up Bruce's shack as Bruce awaits in the parking area. Frank rolls up in his and shuts the sled off. I said. "What happened Frank?" Frank said, Bruce forgot to hook up his (blank) (blank) sled.. Jimmy and I start right back up laughing again. laugh How could you not.. laugh

After a few minutes after Franks return Frank checked his cell phone for missed calls and there was a picture text from me that he opened titled "Foreget something?". Franks response (blank). Enough said... That was the highlight of Saturdays trip.

Great time guys... Thanks for the hauling Frank!

I'm charging you in the future, gas, oil, breakfast, snacks, guide service (low fee there), carabiner rental and copyright fees for comedy script . . .and anything else I can think of. Oh yeah and since laughing is supposed to make you live longer . . . medical charges for increasing your life span. I did keep looking in the rear view mirror to check out the sled but figured it was a short rope and I could not see it . . . I couldn't even see Bruce sitting behind me because of all the snow . . . we were lucky to find the beach house. You should have seen the look on Bruce's face when he looked back and there was no shelter . . . same look when Timmie gets checked by DEC and finds out he threw his current year license out . . . yesterday! It was easy to find you guys through the snow, I just followed the hooten and hollering. What's the use of going if you can't have fun.

Absolutely and that was my point... Even if we didn't catch a fish you can bet there's going to be some comedy when we fish. Generally it's just Kyle wink but it's good to see the wealth shared.. laugh If you guys could have heard Bruce when he called. grinlaugh

Braved the elements today and fished VB with Ricky. Got a late start because of snow clearing duties and road conditions but still made it out to where we have been fishing around 8:00. Moved around a bit, didn't seem to make much difference. Fish were not moving a whole lot and many had lock jaw. Still managed 13 nice ones and Ricky had 8.

Some good trails out to the perch grounds and the heavy wet snow that had fallen didn't impact the walking all that much. That may change big time if the weather forecasts prove to be accurate mad .

Had to really work the fish today to get them to go. At times getting them to bite was almost as difficult as towing two fish traps off the lake by snowmobile smirksmirk. Right Franky?

Timmy I bet you're still chuckling over that one. It's a classic.
