Heater suggestion for 2 man portable?

Yet another tick for a heater cooker.

It cheap, reliable and has little that will go wrong with it. For 50 bucks you can have a heater/hose that will hook up to a bigger tank so you can be out all day. If you ever have a problem with it, replace the thermocouple (5bucks) and your back in action.

Did this test tonight. I have a trekker deluxe. It is -5 out with little wind. I hooked my regular buddy heater to a 20 lb tank and ran it on high with my trekker set up in my driveway. At 5 below I was not comfortable. I had jeans and long underwear a sweatshirt and a jacket. Hands were warm but I could still see my breath. I have a colman propane lantern with two mandrels. When I fired that up I felt comfortable and could no longer see my breath. If it were me I would go with the big buddy. I am taking this rig up to Lake of the Woods and I hope it will be enough. The sun will help some but if you ever crappie fish it will be after dark and you may need the extra heat.

Started with the heater/cooker. Burned stuff, melted lines, and mostly - got sick from the fumes.

Used the buddy for a couple years, but it wouldn't keep up on the cold, windy nights on Red.

Bought a Big Buddy this year. Love it. More heat than a heater/cooker, no fumes in the shack, can place it against the canvas, and the "high" setting is nice to have compared to the regular buddy.

I have reg buddy, sunflower, and big buddy. I use the big buddy 90% of the time. I carry the old worn out sunflower in the box of my truck just incase. I needed to run 2 heaters tonight in my frabill gaurdian with the -14 temps. Big buddy hooked up to the 20lb tank and 1lb on the sunflower. Clam has new swivel lights with fans they came out with this year. I am running 2 of them to blow air around. That helps a lot as well.

I have had nothing but trouble with my big buddy heater any time you run both sides of the heater it will keep going out. I've herd this to be a problem from other people as well. I know I will never buy one again.

The only time I have had problems like that is when the heater is not level or there is too much wind.

I use my BigBuddy in my Otter Lodge with the low pressure hose connected to a 20# tank and it works great no matter what setting I put it on.

I have tried the high pressure hose with the filter but I had too many problems with that setup so now it just sits in the garage.

Bk19 just put the Reflectix above your poles or behind them depending on which pole. I had mine attached with zip ties but I tore holes so now I just let it sit there so I can pull it into place once I get my Otter set up.

I think there were more votes for the Mr. Heater, but I ended up buying the big buddy with the 4,000 and 9,000 setting from FF for $70. Seemed like a better choice for the small portable, and I plan on using it for camping as well.

Thanks for the feedback!

I bought the same shack this year, and all I've used for heat is the regular buddy heater. I've got the big buddy also, but take the smaller one cause it's lighter and smaller. Yesterday was the first time I've run it on high without getting too warm, but I didn't bank snow around the shack, and it was windy and in the single digits. I've had by buddy for 3 or 4 years now, and haven't had any problems. Sure, if I kick it by accident or something, it might go out, but it's quiet and I don't have to worry about burning a hole in my tent, either.

Heater/Cooker with a 20lber outside the shack in a Voyager. Works great. Vent properly. You will occasionally burn something or sizzle a line off, but those things only create more "fun." I always leave some snow when I set up to be able to keep the floor from melting and if there's not enough snow I'll use the shavings/slush from augering to build a nice mound for it. If you have snow but melt it down too much, another shovel full and you're fine. Rarely run higher than low setting.

I hit Mill Lacs this morning with my Mr heater, -24 below and had to turn it down and open the vents in my Voyager. I wish fishing was as hot as my house was. 1 eye, 1 Jumbo, 2 Tulbes. Tried 4 spots, all came out of the same hole in 32 feet.

Back2, you weren't the two guys that pulled their house by hand way out past the point that I give my only eye to were you? If so, I will have to give it to you or who ever they were for pulling a porty and all their stuff about a mile out on the lake in -24 below! crazylaugh

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
