Dads first coyote of the year. NEW PICS 1-2-10 of COYOTE #2

Recommended Posts

Mitch and I hit a few spots in Minnesota then headed back home to try a couple more this morning. I hunted the last two by myself as junior didn't want to take a nap last night and then fell asleep on me as we were driving back home. 1st set somebody beat me to the spot but I decided to give it a shot anyway. I did as well as the previous guy. Nothing. Then I headed to a big pond and set up on the North side with the caller and decoy 50 yards South of me. Started with bird distress then switched to GFP for another 6 minutes then a couple howls and then sat quietly. Looked to the left and saw something come onto the ice and head toward the decoy. Got it in the binoculars and saw it was a coyote. He's just slowly walking right at the decoy so I get the 17 REM on him and he stops 20 yards from the decoy and I squeezed off the shot and he dumped right there. Never moved a muscle and cant see an entry or exit hole. Looks like he just took a ice nap. Here's a pic of his last footsteps and another with my new Kings World snow camo the wife got me for Christmas(Mitch has been eyeballing my old Predator camo so it won't be retired for long).

Vance, if I remember right, your memory wasn't one of your strong points. Seriously though, if I don't hit them on the first shot, there isn't much of a chance they're going to be riding in the back of my truck.

Grayfox, not too shabby!!! Now go out and do that a couple hundred times more. To see the critter lie at the end of a trail of tracks means you fooled him completely and you won the game. Reminds me of when the geese set their wings and their toes are setting among the decoys. He never heard the shot that killed him.

Went out last night around midnight to try a couple spots. I headed to a new spot I picked up last week. I pulled the truck off the road into the farm road and was getting my stuff on when 3 cars come driving by. Well the last one turns out to be a cop and he pulls over and hits the lights. I get out and walk behind the truck and over to his car. He's just checking to make sure everythings ok, he asks me if I'm out coyote hunting and if I think anything is going to come in being that it's so cold out, I'm wondering if anythings going to come after all the lights are flashing. He says good luck and heads off. I grab my stuff and head out. I set the decoy and caller out and tuck up tight to a pine tree overlooking a chopped corn field. I start the caller and let it run for 3 minutes on medium volume then shut it down and wait. I look to the left and I can see one cruising thru the pines and pop out into the field. She's 80 yards out and heading left to right. She stops and I drop her. I look up and see another one running to the right 10 yards behind her. I tried to reposition but I took an off hand shot as it stopped at around 200 and missed it. Really could have used Mit tonight but he was a little tired and wasn't looking forward to the cold. I hit 3 more spots but never saw or heard anything else. I'll be glad when this moon is over as we've never done real well. The next 2 will be much better and should stack up some fur.

First pic is of the decoy and caller. Second is where she dropped and if you look behind it you can see where the other one ran through.

Grayfox, when you're out hunting the elusive 'yote at night, are you shining with a spotlight at the same time or are you using the moon light/light pollution light your way for you? Or can anyone else interject what they are doing at night when light conditions aren't favorable for using the naked eye?

minnesotahusker, The coyotes I shot last week were shot with scopes under the full moon,no lights. This week we'll probably be out with shotguns and lights. A lot of times we call fox in real close on the dark nights and with the snow on the ground we don't even need the lights to see them. Just put the caller say 20 yards out, give them a trail to run by on 1/2 way between you and the caller, keep the wind in your face and a lot of times they will run in, stop and look at the caller right in front of you. Good luck, hope this helps.

Grayfox, it helps a ton. I slammed one during deer season but got to it too late and the belly slipped before I could get it skinned but that got the blood pumping. I know some guys use spotlights with a red lens over it but wasn't sure what your setup was used with. It is fun reading the success you're having on your hunts. Plus the fact you can hunt 'em year round without a license is always appealing.

Does anyone ever have any luck hunting coyotes during the day light or is it just mostly gonna be all at night?

oh yes, thats when the majority of predator hunters hunt. We have called them during all hours of the day; early and sunset are traditionally the best times to call, but if the winds are under 10, cold temps it doesnt seem to matter!

Around here it's pretty hard to get them to come in during the day,too much traffic on the roads, IMHO. We did take two last year but we were on a property that was 1/2 mile from the nearest road and there wasn't a house closer than 1/2 mile either.
