A good wireless router

Scott K

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for a good wireless router. I have had linksys for the past year, and I have had nothing but problems with it. I have had 3 bad routers from them, customer service sucks, and their warranty dept isnt worth the phone call. I am just throwing mine away, even though it is still under warranty.

I need a router that will work, one that will have a decent range, and last more then a week. One that I can run a network off of, with several wireless devices.

I am not going to buy another linksys, so please dont include them in your recommendations.

Thanks!

I have heard netgear is fairly good. Dlink makes some decent stuff.

I have a linksys that has worked like a charm for me, but if you have had some lousy experiences can't blame you for not wanting to deal with them.

Remember all manufactures have issues. I have a linksys (Cisco) going on 3 years no problems outside of Comcast resets, I have although run across a couple bad out of the box for others. netgear is also a good choice. I have not dealt with their routers in a while but from what I remember finicky setup somewhat proprietary to netgear components. There are a lot of options to choose from. If you are looking for something more dependable with a good solid range you might want to look into a more industrial option. I have worked with a couple but not well enough to give an opinion or recommendation

I've had a Netgear router for about a year. Range is good and wireless connections to my laptop, Windows 6 cell phone, and Wii are good. The one issue I've had is it loses the internet connection to the computer sometimes. After un-plugging the ethernet cable and re-plugging into another port it works fine.

I had a Dlink and had all kinds of problems and it was a pain to set up and deal with. I have a Linksys now and its been great, no problems.

Sorry you are having problems. Maybe try a Netgear or get something more industrial/commercial as mentioned above?

I know all products are going to have a reject here and there, but the way I was treated from customer service will drive me away for ever. Not to mention the 3 bad routers I bought and were all bad. I have spent over 20 hours on the phone with them, half of them cant speak enough english to understand what I am describing to them, sitting on hold for more then 45 minutes at a time, then have the nerve to tell me they need to bill my credit card the amount of a new router, and shipping, then if the router is proved to be deffective they will refund all but the shipping.

I have gone through 3 bad ones in a year, 2 right away, as I took them out of the box they didnt work, it costed me $22 to ship them each, from the time I shipped mine to them, I got the new one, 1 month later.

Then when I let them know that I am not paying to ship them back the last router, that I just got in the mail the day before. They said then there isnt anything they can do for me, and hung up the phone!

Like I said, deffects happen, but to treat me like that after 3 straight deffects in a row, no thanks!

you might try to take your router recipt, and the case# from linksys to bestbuy or wherever and explain to them the problem. requesting a exchange for same / simular. I have had to do this in the past for customers. Never had a problem worth a try over the shipping cost etc.

Good luck!

If you are talking a Ethernet cable connection try taking the little tabs that hold the cable in and bending them back a little, they get weak and won't hold the cable in tight enough for a good connection.

Just tried it, we'll see if it works. Thanks!

I have experienced bad/horrible support also from linksys. I also am going on my third router. I have not replaced it because I just dont want the hassle of dealing with their customer service if the next router goes down. This has really turned me off to the wireless technoligy.

Maybe I will see if BB will let me exchange it for a differant brand.

I have not had a whole lot of experience the retail network products, so hard to comment. Considering Linksys was purchased by Cisco(who has excellent support) I would have thought the support would be better. Wireless technology is pretty good overall, but like anything else there can be some complexity getting it to work.

I've used Buffalo Technologies wireless routers and have had good luck with them, I think at one time they were in BestBuy but don't know if they still are or not, you can find them online at buffalotech, they usually carry a 2 year warranty.

Cisco is working very hard to keep their business line and the Linksys consumer line far apart. This is so they can justify the high prices of the business line. Some of the chip sets are even the same, just crippled on the cheap stuff. Bare bones support on the low cost line too. It makes sense for Cisco to do this. The LAN discussion in the Customer thread is the perfect example why.
