alg
If the snow they are predicting for Tuesday/Wednesday does occur, and with ice just forming on area lakes, this could make for very bad ice conditions. We could see poor ice and slush.
PmDavis300
big lakes down here arent frozen yet so im not worried about it. are your big lakes skimmed over yet?
BrdHunter01
Only 1-3 inches in St. Cloud is what I hear... Plus those weathermen/women are never right...
bgreen82
im more worried about the small metro pond/lakes that i was hoping to be on this weekend.
bogwalker
alg, I was thinking the same thing. Bowstring and other area lakes have a thin layer of ice covered by a thin layer of snow.
ironman
It's not supposed to be a major snow fall, a couple more inches isn't going to insulate the ice that much. Also, no temps above freezing anytime soon to create any slush. I suppose some water could come up if, IF the snow was heavy enough but it looks like it going to be light fluffy stuff with wind so In my opinion I wouldn't worry to much about it. 63ihharvester4x4
ya that snow wouldve been nice to have, if we already had about 18 of icethat woulda been nice house banking snow
Ryan84*
it's making ice forsure.
KG243
You guys are putting to much faith in the weatherman, he gets paid to be wrong!
OnAFly
I go by the rule of three when it comes to snow accumulation forecasts...whatever they say say, divide it by three, that's what you'll end up with. Seems to have worked out a lot that past four or five years. We'll only know how much we'll have when it gets here
DTro
And in some instances, multiply it by 3 Take a look in the Vermilion forum, there is a guy named Frank that posts there who seems to be leaps and bounds above the local yocals on the news. Ol_Bullhead
yeah snow is coming but so is wind from what i see so it will bank on the shores if it doesn't break up the ice on the lakes then real cold so the center will be making good ice by weekend
OnAFly
I guess that's just be Metro thing, just seems like we never get the amount of snow that gets forecasted. I'm really hoping for it this time, I'd like to be out on the ice soon...without slush
walleyeslayr
The temps are cold enough that it won't be real heavy snow. A lot of it will blow off.
McGurk
Snow forecast is thinning out, and forecasted temps are colder than expected. Looks great for ice to me!!!Weather-mania strikes again!
IceProwler
That is great to hear...
Brad B
they were also predicting wind gusts up to 40 mph so wouldn't that keep the snow off the ice and allow it to get thinker but like was stated already the wind could open up some of the lakes that are not totally froze. my suggestion just use caution on the ice. McGurk
Wind will bust up any thin ice out there and push it towards the downwind shore, chewing up any other thin ice along the way. The good news is that is also takes heat off of the surface water so when it calms down, it should lock up pretty quickly. As stated, though, BE CAREFUL!!! CrowRiverRat83
The big lakes with thin ice and some open water will probably break up a little with the strong winds. But thats alomost good since the snow wont build on them then. And also with the frigid temps after the storm, it wont take long at all for them to lock up. As for small lakes, I think the vast majority of the snow will blow off.
Hoffer
I was worried about this too...the last 2 years have been TERRIBLE for ice conditions - too much slush.I think the big lakes around the metro are safe - none have all frozen over yet - and the wind will keep them open, the snow we are getting for the most part should be absorbed with the open water...then after Wednesday the snow is supposed to dissipate and the weather stays cold...should cap off the bigger lakes and make fishable ice by late weekend....
