Hand auger

So... I was at a local store today looking at hand augers. They had as follows...

HT Enterprise brand - Strike-Master Mora - Strike-Master Lazer: the prices went from $29 on the HT to $99 on the lazer.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Is the quality of the strike-master lazer really worth 4 times the price of the HT one? Should I get the "cheap" one or invest in the more expensive one?

I have a nice, new strike-master power auger that I will be using when the ice is 6"+.

Thank you,

Tink

I've had the mora, the strikemaster and the Nils hand augers. Mora was cheap but not that great. The strikemaster is great and you can find replacement blades easily. The Nils is fantastic but getting the blades resharpened is a bit of a hassle. I forget who but someone on this site can resharpen them for you.

Two years ago I bought an HT Arctic Express 7" (AE-7) hand auger. It was alot cheaper than thr Strike Master and it works great. It cuts ice easily. It is similar to the Lazer augers from SM. I even bought a blade guard from Strike Master and it fit perfectly. The one that came with the HT didn't fit very well. One other thing on the HT is that you might want to replace the bolt for adjusting the handle height. It is soft steel or aluminum and will eventually strip the threads. I bought a hardened steel bolt and had a small bar welded on top of the head to make a "T" so you don' tneed a hex wrench to tighten it up. I've had it for 2 years and haven't needed to sharpen or change the blades yet.

The AE-7 is awesome on my IceGator.

I have a mora and a lazer. The mora sits in the garage and collects dust. The lazer goes fishing with me every time until the power auger comes out.

Not saying that the cheaper ones don't work, but there is extra effort required. IF you get one of the lesser models, go with a smaller hole size, maybe the 6". It will help speed up the process.

ive had both mora and lazer. spend more to get lazer. as for hand auger, it never hurts to bring it with all year for when power [PoorWordUsage] out or you forget to put full tank in like i have done.

walmart still carries fishing gear (sarcasm)??? what a joke, cannot believe how that place has gone downhill in recent years. they seem to have reduced the sporting goods (guns especially) and opted to peddle more nintendo ds's for kids to sit home and play while they eat gummy worms in front of the flatscreen tv.

sorry, pent up frustration of that store.

yeah, i'll opt for a place that'll actually say "hello" and offer help before i have to ask.

customer service means something in my book...but that's my personal opinion.

we used to have a regular walmart, and since it's gone "super", the sporting goods dept has taken a nosedive to say the least.

I just picked up a reconditioned 8 inch lazer from a area shop for $50.00 they also had the moras reconditioned for $35.00. reconditioned ones are the ones strike master used as demos at events. they put new blades on them and touch up any paint that may need it. The shop is in maple lake so this gives it away since they are the only shop I know of in maple lake. this shop also sells reconditioned power strikemasters at a greatly reduced cost.

I have had the moras and they work fine but I made it a rule to never borrow it out and never use it to reopen an old hole. I bought a 7" lazer last year early ice and I love it. Cuts much better then the old Moras and blows through ice pretty quickly. I haven't tried a Nils.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
