Dotch
...tune from Jeopardy playing in backgroundDon't feel like the Lone Ranger on hawks. Close as I can get usually is big or little before they're too far away.
MN Shutterbug
According to my book, Red-shouldered hawks have a dark tipped tail and red shoulders. Also, this hawk was at least as large as a Red-tail.The dark morph immature Swainson's appears to be the closest. They are very uncommon, with only 10% of Swainson's being the dark morph. Although, one book tells me that they are all black except for the face, underwing coverts and banded tail, even though the pictures in one guide show dark brown. One HSOforum states that dark morphs appear to be uniformly colored underneath, except for the tail. But, it is the closest possibilty that I can find. JayinMN
There is a dark morph of the redtail hawk called "Harlan's redtail hawk" just another possibility.
MN Shutterbug
There is a dark morph of the redtail hawk called "Harlan's redtail hawk" just another possibility. I had never heard of that one. However, my Sibley shows this hawk as almost always dark blackish with white markings. But, it could be at an in between phase. MN Shutterbug
I just checked out allaboutbirds.org, which is a Cornell site, and it does look very much like my hawk. It does say the adult dark form is extremely variable and this one shows similar colorings as mine. I think you might have got it.
JayinMN
The last picture I sent you looks like his twin. The pearling on the wings is identical. I wonder how common they are in the state? I really thought you had a flamingo there at first.
MN Shutterbug
I'm going to post this flamingo, I mean Harlan's Hawk, on the MOU site and see what people have to say.
