Moonie
To the party hunting down the lake from us on sat... -When ducks are circling and getting lower on each pass... be patient.-More specifically: When ducks are working your decoys and make their final decent right at you... hold off shooting ar them at 50+ yards. If you wait until they're on the deck at 20-30 yards, you'll probably do more than sail one out of a flock of 8-10 and wiff with the rest of your shots.-Play the wind. A stong wind in your face usually isn't the best for shooting birds in the deeks... you were the first on the lake, pick a good spot with the wind at your back or at least coming across... you may shoot more. -Practice your calling. and when you call, just know that those ducks flying at 5,000 feet in a V may not come down. Oh, I forgot to write: -Try to get to the lake earlier than 15 minutes before shooting time, and if you are that late, try to avoid trolling 60yds past our spread 5 minutes after shooting time starts. Well the geese were eating up our small spread of decoys but didn't shoot well. Oh well, that happens!

GooBack
those are great tips. i hunt with a richentone MVP tho, its suposed to call those long range ducks. would flagging be better. I use black cloud too so i can get a duck or two, i never seem to get them real close. i don't know what im doing wrong if I let them circle too long they usually go to another setup nearby. mudslinger
GooBack, you have 9 posts so im not sure if you are kidding or serious. I hope you are being goofy but if not this may help<<<< The MVP is SUPER LOUD and is really designed for championship calling. If you're using it as your primary call you may want to pick up a finishing call like a Microhen for closer work to get the ducks in your face. MVP is a sweet noise maker but not the best "hunting call"

GooBack
i watched a Richentone dvd with jim stevens i think hes a champion caller whatever that means. he said the MVP is the best call for long range ducks. i don't know how to get them too close yet. how close do they have to be to use a call thats not loud? how good can a duck here? mudslinger
It is a great long range call yes. If you have their attention and they give your spread a look, either quit calling cause you have their attention or switch to a softer quieter call. If you get them 50yds from your spread and no closer I would say get concealed better. It could be that your boat or blind just isnt up to snuff as far as being hidden or they don't like your decoy presentation.
GooBack
how do you present your decoys? i just usually throw mine in the water.

bobbymalone
I've got another tip that no one has mentioned yet.If has an 8 foot wingspan and is snow white, that's not a goose. Quit honking at them and for chrissakes don't shoot.
dan z
This usually works good. [/quote NICE
honker23
I haven't heard a real duck make most of the sounds you'll hear at a world duck calling championship.....30 seconds of feed calling followed by a 26 note hail call that lasts for 20 seconds.Get out early and listen to the "real" ducks on the water in the morning before they leave. Try to copy. A 9 dollar double reed will work just fine.Time on the water observing what works and what doesn't is your best teacher. If the first flock of the day gives you a look and bolts....change the spread a little, your calling, or your blind. Don't wait until 6 flocks flare the same way and then think to yourself we should change something, it may be too late!Field hunting is a little different....find the X and hide
