hot spot turning into a problem

Recommended Posts

Now I know this is what we all dream of, but doesnt anyone have an idea on what I should do. One of my stands has turned into a hot spot for bucks. For whatever reason I've been seeing on average 2-4 bucks everytime I go out. mostly little ones. But i've seen a fork, 2 differents 6's, small 8 and a big 8 and 10, all within a 100 yard area. the problem i'm having is getting in and out of stand. I went in last night at 3pm and had a 6 walking my trail 40 yards in front of me, and then on the way out the small 8. he stayed just ahead me all the way to my truck then hopped the road and stood out in the field. Havent got any shots yet, but i cant move into the area without scarying them off. do i move my stand off the site, how do i approach an area like this. I have rubs and scraps everywhere. I had the big 8 bedded under my stand one morning, and the 10 bedded off about 35 yards a different morning. any ideas on how to get in and out without pushing them away.

Thanks

Simple - move your stand. Sounds like you're setup very close or actually in their bedding area. Wait for a windy or rainy day with the right wind, sneak in and take your stand down and start hunting the fringes. If you keep hunting that stand, chances are high you'll end up blowing them all out. I'm surprised you're still seeing them. You don't have to move far but get a good 75-100 yds out of there in the direction of the food source and I think you'll have better luck. If only I had that problem!

OMG, tough problem. Sounds like you are right in the heart of their bedding area.

Personally, I would move the stand off the sight, and try and find and intercept trail betweent the bedding area and the food source. I wouldn't want to be right in the middle of it, but close.

i had a spot like that before on a field edge where the deer would feed in the evenings. I sat there till it was completely black outside and creeped away, they didnt see, but did boot, but they kept coming back. You could try to move your stand as well that wouldnt hurt.

I have to agree with the advice above. Another option is to leave that stand there and put up one or two more on the edges of the bedding area. To hunt your original stand get there very eary and wait for the big 8 and 10 to come to you. By early I mean 1.5 to 2 hours before first shooting light. It might be a long wait in the dark but it would be worth it to get a shot. I would also only hunt this stand in the morning and hunt yoru new stands in the evening.

I'd leave the stand for a bit later and fringe hunt or just hunt the bedroom when you think you can sneak in, although I have been in the bedroom, got to the last step of my stand and they can see the movement from their bed and bust out. It won't be long and the bucks will spread out and establish their core area. Sounds like a bunch of them want that core area.

Bear55, I knew someone would say that.. smile

I'm going out early tomorrow...530ish, and then hang another stand after the hunt. Hopefully this will pan out.

Someone stated about them all wanting this area why would so many bucks be congregating right now. and where did all the does go. I havent seen a doe since they've moved in. maybe i should quite asking questions before my luck turns. thanks for the help

Maybe hunt that stand in the morning get in real early while there out feeding and then take advantage of them coming back to the bedding area. It's a tuff call but tread lightly and don't over hunt that spot as they could get educated and find a new spot. A second stand on the fringe mentioned just might be the answer and as the rut picks up and the bachleor group gets busted up that stand could easily go cold in the next week or two.

I hear ya Abndoc, last fall, Oct.19th-Nov. 2nd had 1 doe and fawn on my Tcam and 12 different bucks many times on it. I think they are avoiding these hormone charged bucks and steering clear, my camera was deep in the jungle over a single ground scrape. A few nights ago I watched a good buck chase does and fawns around the hay field, it was like he was just being mean, they'd get a certain distance away from him and he'd charge them, they'd run off and then he'd resume eating, maybe a bit to is once that velvet is off they steer clear a bit more unless it's their fawn buck from the year before, just guessing some, but I'd hunt that area with caution and best of luck.
